Is the Ultrabay Slim used on T4x series compatible with T61p

#1 Post by agarza » Tue Jul 15, 2008 11:53 pm

I'm wondering. I might switch from T42p to T61p at the end of 2008

More specifically I'm talking about the 2nd hard disk adapter for Ultrabay Slim. I love using a 2nd HDD on my Thinkpad

I'm not sure that's correct. The bay size is the same so you could swap optical drives between them. But the T40 series is a PATA drive and the T60 series is SATA, so are you sure you can insert a PATA drive in the T60 bay? In any case, you obviously can't mount the drive in the Thinkpad.

Yes, you can use a T4x ultrabay HDD adapter in T6x. The T6x works with both SATA and PATA HDD adapters. Optical drives from T4x work in T6x too ... only the battery is incompatible between these models.

I can confirm that it's possible. I'm using my old PATA drive(s) with the same adapter in my T61p, T60p, and occasionally in my wife's R52.

I would like to clarify/correct what Gator and blue2 said. All the HDD adapters and optical drives use the same (PATA) connection. The SATA 2nd HDD adapters have a built-in PATA-> SATA bridge. The difference between T6x optical drives and T4x drives is the faceplate shape. Either kind of drive will work in either type of machine. The OEM SATA HDD adapter won't fit into a T4x machine because there is a pin on the back that keeps it from plugging in all the way. That pin can be broken off and the adapter will work fine in a T4x. The aftermarket HDD adapters have no pin and will work in any machine. The PITA HDD adapters will work in any machine.

Thanks for your replies. I'm thinking on buying a T61p or a W500 later in the future if I find a way to buy the laptop in Lenovo USA (I'm from Mexico).

Anyone know if the docks are the same? I really hate spending close to 200 just to relocate a few ports...

You cannot use the same dock for T4x and T6x, if that's what you meant. The former use the "Dock II", the latter the "Advanced Dock".
I assume you will be able to share the dock between the T6x and W500 as the latter mentions the Advanced Mini Dock as an accessory in its spec.
