What's the difference between T30 Assy and Assy-2 mobos?

#1 Post by RealBlackStuff » Thu Jul 17, 2008 8:48 am

Can someone please explain the difference between the T30 motherboards?
There are these 2 groups:
- System Board Assembly (with 30L3014/30L3015 chipset)
- System Board Assembly 2 (with 46P0310/46P0312 chipset)

From my own experience, these boards are interchangeable if you ignore the security chip.
And both boards take all the CPUs, provided you put the better cooler on CPUs from 2.0GHz upwards.

What say you?

Looking at the parts manual, I see two part #'s for secure chip boards -

Board w/ secure chip - 91P7692
Board 2 w/ secure chip - 91P7698

I plugged in as many models as I had time for with each board at the product support page, and it looks like to me the board 2 machines have 2.0Ghz CPU's and better. So, a logical conclusion might be that there is something different about boards for higher speed machines. If that is true, it would be interesting to know what the differences are since all CPU's appear to work in both. Something with cooling maybe?. I know there are more cooling slots on the bottom of the 2.0Ghz and better machines. Maybe that is a clue? Here's some links if you want to test that theory -

Like I said, apart from the presence of a (removable) security chip and what looks like a different number chipset, I can't see any physical difference in the mobos itself.
Haven't looked yet at the bases of the T30s but I saw a reference somewhere to more cooling thingies on the inside bottom.

AFAIK there are differences btw the 1.8 and 2.0 cooling systems
first the lid over the mini pci has cooling slots on the 2.0
second - there is some sort of a copper radiator inside the base casing underneath the pcmcia cage (i've posted some pictures in the "base replacement surgery" topic) - but for the 1.8 models

from what i've looked i couldn,t find any other physical differences between the 2 mobos (1.8 and 2.0) ...
maybe there are some smd's values different...
ex: T30, TR451, TR453, R51, R52, X40, X60, R61, T400
X200 - P8600 2.66Ghz, 3G, 250G
G50-70 - 3558U 2.4Ghz, 4G, 1T
