Being a 5-year old T40, the eBay auction you are pointing to above, one could imagine that its CCFL has seen a good bit of lifetime... so assuming that it the loose GPU problem that this T40 suffers from, then the LCD is still a bit old, I would say. If you only need a new 14.1" SXGA+ LCD, and not all the rest of a dead T40, you might benefit more from looking for the panel alone, and not getting an used one that is attached to some worn-out or even dead ThinkPad. Watch this auction (ending in less than 2 hours!). If that particular ThinkPad is in healthy condition (and the listing indicate that!), then you may potentially sell the Radeon9600 motherboard alone for around $175-200 - and then keep the LCD-assy (lid, hinges, antennas, LCD panel) "as is", and swap it to replace your badly scratched T42p!
Watch out the many eBay auctions on ThinkPad T4x "for parts" or "for repair" - there are quite a few T40p/T41p/T42(p)/T43(p) 14.1" SXGA+ being sold like that. Still your big problem... is to become allowed to bid on "for USA-residents only" auctions, and then having any won item shipped out of USA. If I was in the USA I would have been happy to bid on behalf of you, and then ship items won onwards to you in Mexico... but unfortunately, I am in a way "more outside USA" compared to what you are. Maybe there is some kind and helpful forum-member here offering his or her help to get you back and to become a happy ThinkPad'er again?
Edit: An alternative could be this.
Best of luck, Alfredo!

Yes, probably both of you are right, I'd like to have a new SXGA+ panel, but considering how fast laptops depreciate over time, I may find is not worth the money spending 200+ for a new panel.
The fact I like about old T4x series (not T43's) is the fact that you can put any PATA disk, any manufacturer and it will work, no 1802 error, flawless performance.
I was checking, and found out $479 is for sale a NEW T41:
IBM ThinkPad T41p PM 1.6GHz 1GB 40GB DVD/CDRW XP WIFI
Cheap indeed.

Yep, but at least the screen is grade A, with no use. But who knows, I'm in process of getting a new SXGA+ screen in my country, but the seller is not answering the questions

We are going back to the US this fall - if you can wait until then (that is what I am going to do unless I decide to do a Merkalink deal) we can bring you something. We're driving, so no big Aduana issues.
Merkalink will work with you on $1000+ invoices - they will split the shipment up, but you will also pay more. Give them a call (I assume you speak Spanish, no?) if you're interested in that route. They are very secure; I have friends who have used them for electronics and I have used them for medical books (yeah, not so valuable
).
Otherwise, if you can wait until the fall, I can bring stuff across the border for you.
We keep a mailing address (mail service) in the US in South Dakota and can always have stuff shipped there until we're in the US and have it forwarded to us wherever we happen to be, but I am hesitant to do this with electronics as I would have no idea WHEN the object could be inspected for DOA. But that is also an option if you find something you just can't stop yourself from purchasing. Right now I have a stick of 1GB PC2700 laptop RAM sitting there (among other stuff).

T30 2366-81U still works but not being currently used. I think I'll rectify that situation.
T40 2373-19U dead
(2) T42 2373-JXU with Flexview LCDs. One with either GPU or southbridge issue.
T43 2687-D4U with possible software problem. Awaiting R&Rs.

Re: T4x for sale on ebay.
It depends what your priorities are. If the T42p with SXGA+ fits your needs better than a newer Thinkpad model, then it may be worthwhile staying with your unit. OTOH, if you like the new models, then this may be a good time to upgrade.xtr wrote:I'd like to have a new SXGA+ panel, but considering how fast laptops depreciate over time, I may find is not worth the money spending 200+ for a new panel.

jamnkats, thanks for your kind help, If you decide to your mail address on the US I could wait to get a new panel:
IBM T60p T41 14" SXGA+ LCD Screen LTN141P4-L02 TESTED
I'm unsure if this screen fits my T42p, in the auction it states that is compatible with:
IBM ThinkPad T60p T43 T40 T41 T42 14.1" SXGA+ LCD Screen LTN141P4-L02 TESTED.
Maybe it's a T60 SXGA+ backward compatible with the T4x series
IBM P/N 92P6757
FRU P/N 92P6760
In any case, I would be interested to get that item should be possible, given that at this moment I have no cash, so waiting for this fall is a feasible option.

Ok, XTR. If you go the Ebay route I am not sure if the seller will allow you to ship to an unconfirmed address or not - it might be best to go through the forum here. I'll keep you updated on our travel plans - right now we're keeping a sharp eye on TS Dolly and hoping she'll just brush us on her way to the GOM. This has already been a very active season and it is only July. Sigh.
PM or email me through the forum if you want to use our US address - it would have to be addressed to myself or my husband for our service to legally accept the package. Make sure the seller uses tracking so we can make sure it arrived. I can also email the service and make sure it arrives.

OK, thank you very much again. I *might* be content If I manage to fix the part on the screen that is buffed or you could say 'glossy' so that there's no need to buy another LCD screen, I'll post a picture soon on the damaged area of the LCD so that we could brainstorm if there's a way to restore that damaged area to have again a matte finish.
Cheers

Here are the pics of my 'scratched' LCD, that area that seems shiny is a result of me putting too much Brasso, any suggestions on how to even the surface to have the same matte finish:
