Hot Ram

Could anyone tell me if a stick of pc100 256meg ram runs any hotter than a stick of pc100 128meg.

Assuming that they are running in identical conditions (computer, operating system, tasks, etc.), about the only way to determine which one will be hotter would be to compare the active current specs from each module's datasheet This also assumes that the testing condition specified in the datasheets are the same between them as well.

However, generally speaking, if each one uses the same type of individual RAM, say for example a 16MB (16 for the 256MB module and 8 for the 128MB), then yes, the 256MB will be hotter since it will consume twice the power (as it has twice as many memory components). This generalization ignores the possibility that one of the banks of memory may be in a low power state.

So lf I find a sodIMM with the same # of chips on it I can be reasonably certain that there will not be a significant difference in the temperature. OK thanks.

As individual memory devices get larger in size (e.g., 16MB vs. 64MB), usually through the shrinking geometries used in their design, the power consumed by the larger memory does not double or quadruple. Quite the opposite; those newer designs, although having twice the amount of memory storage, can require less power than their older cousins. You really have to read the manufacturer's datasheets in order to get a good handle on if one module will be "hotter" than another.

Wow I never gave power consumption a thought. It is in fact a greater concern now. I guess I will just have to "buy it and try it"
