X22 HDD Heat Problem

#1 Post by denisky » Sat Jul 19, 2008 9:16 am

Using Mobile Meter:

Average R51e CPU: 51C; HDD: 35C
Average X22 CPU: 52C; HDD: 53C

My X22 HDD is quite hot. When idle, the temperature of HDD is around 50 degrees celcius. Is that normal? Should I replace the HDD?

From what I know, failure temperature for mosr HDDs is just above 55 degrees C.

You may want to backup your stuff on media and start looking for a new drive.

Good luck.

If I add more RAM to it, will it be cooler than now? Because I think the HDD is very busy due to swapping all the time, thus causing the excessive heat (my RAM is only 128MB).

You may or may not get the results by adding RAM.

Try running PC-Doctor on your drive...

Good luck.

I did a HDD test using PC-Doctor, and it failed on Short Self-Test. :(

I think I'd better save some money to get new HDD & RAM.

HDD: Hitachi DK23DA-20
RAM: 640MB (128 onboard + 512 Kingston <- just added today)

I'm using it for browsing + listening MP3. No heavy task. My R51e is much cooler, just slightly warm to touch. Is there something wrong with my X22?

aceo07, how is your X22? Does it get hot too?

I've give it a try later when I get home. I'll take temperature readings. Mine does get hot/very warm, but my room is currently 82f (27c).

Sorry for the forgotten task. Been busy last few days.

I just booted my X22 and the harddrive is idling at 47c in my 28c room. I'm using Ubuntu 8.04. The cpu is idling at 45c. I just turned it on about 5-10 minutes ago and logged in.

Thank you aceo07 for your replies.

I think the thickness on each ThinkPads really affects the heat alot. The thicker R series has more room for hot air to flow thus reducing the heat, whereas in X series the lack of room for air is the reason of why it gets hotter than R series. CMIIW.

I have a similar heat problem with a T30 and a Hitachi 4200 RPM HTS424040M9AT00 drive (it actually runs hotter than another T30 with a 5400 RPM drive)when the machine is under heavy use. I'm thinking of replacing the drive soon, although it doesn't seem to heat up when used as an always on machine for downloading.

On your MP3s you might consider getting an 8 or 16MB CF card for the X22s CF slot (along the left side of the machine, just behind the PC Card Slot), and placing your MP3s there. That's how I have my X22 set up.

MP3s are frequently accessed, but hardly ever re-written, so this owuld be an ideal use for Flash media.

That sounds good, I will wait until CF media gets bigger in capacity (32-64GB?) and cheaper.

I put a Solidstate Disk Drive(SDD) in my X23.
Quiet, cool, and the battery lasts forever.
I think I paid just over $100 for a 32G drive.

It's a thought.

Thanks rdh8 for your reply.

I really want an SSD too, but it is not popular here in Indonesia. People still stick with the traditional HDD. Maybe I have to wait for 2 years until SSD dominate the HDD popularity.

I just got a brand new Hitachi 5400rpm 160GB IDE HDD, installed the OS and all stuffs, and I was amazed by its speed and responsiveness. This thing is much faster than my previous Hitachi 4200rpm 20GB HDD. Heat-wise, Hitachi 160GB HDD is about 10C cooler than the previous Hitachi 20GB HDD. I wish it could be alot cooler than that :( .
