Ultranv & Thinklight

#1 Post by daly » Tue Jul 22, 2008 5:12 am

First of all hi everyone and thanks for letting me join this community I am no techi so I prob won't be much use to anyone here :D .

I've had my T41 2373 for a number of years now and been very reliable but nothing lasts for ever and I have recently run into a couple of probs,

First one is the thinklight has stopped working still shows on the screen when I Fn but it don't actually light up.

2nd prob is the UltraNav this has also stopped working, The bios setting is enabled but it doesn't show in Device Manager though it does show in the control panel though both the Ultranav & Trackpoint are greyed out, the plug is in under the arm rest but this stops both Ultranav & Trackpoint from working though unplugging the cable allows the Trackpoint to work.

I have tried the usual reinstall drivers and os but this don't change anything even bought a replacement Ultranav but things are just the same.

If anyone can help thanks.

Replace the touchpad assembly to repair the ultranav problem. It is held by 4 screws if you want to keep your palmrest.
The thinklight can only be lcd cable, led assembly, or keyboard.
Test the function of the PgUp key, and if it does not work, try another keyboard.
edit: just read you repalced the ultranav, replace the keyboard, if one of the 3 mouse buttons is stuck, it will cause problems with the ultranav.

hi,

i'm having the same trouble with the ultranav touchpad and trackpoint on a thinkpad t40 (type 2373).

i tried:
-reseating the connector for the touchpad (several times),
-downloading and installing the drivers for the touchpad and the trackpoint (both the ultranav and the synaptic ones)
-disabling and re-enabling the bios options for both,
-updating the bios and the embedded controller,
-a linux live cd (freespire 2.0)

none of that worked. i have a wireless usb mouse and that works, but when i check the device manager, the only thing there is the usb mouse. i know that the bios is recognizing that the touchpad is connected because when i unplug it, the option to disable the touchpad isn't there.

i also tried the PC Doctor tool which had the following result for the diagnostics: Digital Signature Chip Test FAILED
and for the interactive mouse test it said:
"No mouse (or mouse driver) installed!"

the first result might not be relevant and the second makes sense considering that it doesn't show up in the windows device manager.

i'm totally mystified by this one. have you had any luck? does anyone have any other ideas?

No luck so far I have tried my Ultranav in another machine and it works fine so I guess it must be some kind of motherboard failure though everything else is working just fine.

So do I get rid now or wait till it fails completely. :?
