T41 highest possible CPU Grade

#1 Post by silane » Wed Jul 23, 2008 8:00 am

Hi,

I have an aged T41, 1.4G CPU. I want to upgrade it to the highest speed possible.

Anyone know which CPU I can upgrade to?

Thank.

Your T41 has a 400mhz Bus and originally came with the 1st generation Intel Pentium M processor of the "Banias" line. These processor had a 1Mb L2 (on die) cache which was twice that of the previous P4-M CPUs. However, the 2nd generation of the line; "Dothan came with a 2Mb L@ (on die) cache making it a faster in most instances. Therefore, many users (myself included) on this forum have upgraded their T41s to essentially make them T42s. The fastest available has a model number of 765 which is 2.1Ghz. You can use the link below to go to the "ThinkWiKi" site page on the Dothan CPUs and see the entire line for yourself.

Family Daily Drivers- T430s, T530, X220
Work- Sadly, the ThinkPads have gone away...... and replaced by HP ProDesk SFF drone machines :(
Other Projects- Edge 15, Z61m (Titanium)
Historic Retired ThinkPads- T42p, X20, A31p, 701c, 760XD, WorkPad C505

I believe you mean: 2373-1FA, which, if that is the case the Lenovo support site gives the following information:

Product: ThinkPad T41 2373-1FA [change]
Operating system: All [change]

Original description: P M 1.4GHz, 256MB RAM, 30GB 4200rpm HDD, 14.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 32MB ATI Radeon 7500, 16x10x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD, Intel 802.11b wireless(MPCI), Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), UltraNav, Secure Chip, 6 cell Li-Ion battery, WinXP Pro

In any case, the information I gave in the previous reply should be correct.

Thank for the reply, my question, can the mainboard and recognise and run a 2.1G Dothan?

See today's active thread also in this T4x forum: How to make a T41 faster? (incl. the post of Wed Jul 23, 2008 6:18 am and particularly the links pointed to therein), and you will find the answer to your question!

The sweet deal upgrading your old Banias is a P M 745 1.8GHz, found cheaper at eBay, more heat will buildup in the 2GHz and beyond.
A nice 7200rpm would be another worth upgrade you could to to your machine. Note that the original HDD of your machine is only 4200RPM, those are the slowest HDD to use this days, they first came with a cache of 2MB and newer had more, but typically you would want to upgrade to at least 5400rpm drive, but 7200 is the choice for a performance, snappy laptop
