T61 Memory slot reader doesn't recognize my 4GB MemoryStick

#1 Post by jdrudolp » Wed Jul 23, 2008 3:13 pm

Does anybody know if there is a driver that fixes this? I can see a 256K MemoryStick, but I basically get the "I don't know what this is" error message with my 4GB stick.

Have you verified that the 4GB stick is OK? (my T61p has had no problems recognizing my Sandisk 4GB memory stick duo out of the box)

Yeah after I put it back in my camera it work fine, and when I put it in a USB converter it worked there too. I will try it again though just to make sure it wasn't something else the day I tried it.

Is there a way to check driver version for that memory slot? When did you get your T61?

When I go to the Device manager (in Win XP Pro), expand "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers", and right click on "Ricoh Memory Stick Controller", I see the following in the "Driver" tab:
Driver Provider: Ricoh Company
Driver Date: 7/30/2007
Driver Version: 6.0.1.11

Okay so I do have an older driver ->

Driver Provider : Ricoh Company
Driver Date : 2/16/2007
Driver Version 6.0.1.10

But the "I am an idiot" part is that I tried the 4GB stick again this morning and it works! It is a memory stick pro duo, so I need the little adapter to get it to work in the bigger memory stick slot, so maybe I just didn't have it all seated properly before.

Thanks for the pointer to the driver, I never would have looked for it under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. If I ever get a 16GB or something like that I'll know where to look if I need to update the driver.

Well I'm going to take back calling myself an idiot, it doesn't seem to be fully functional. I can see the files, I can copy files to it, and copy them back, but I can't copy the files that are already on it to my HD. It starts to copy, and then the copy hangs forever until I kill it. I also can double click on pictures I copy to it and see them, but not on any of the ones that were already on it.

I tried updating the driver on the lenovo site, but I am still getting the same version I had before. Does anybody know where I can get the .11 driver?

1. go to lenovo.com to get latest update
you can either mannualy find it or download system update, which will automatically update all drivers of your laptop.

2. There's some incompatibility with this express card reader. usually, the memory stick/xD-picture driver is always good and no problem, while sometimes someone will find some problems in their SD/MMC controller, may due to some cost-reducing reason from factory side, but i'm not sure.

so if after your driver's update, you still fail to do everything on SD/mmc. I do suggest using some SD-usb converter to finish your job.

Okay so I *think* I have it working. I searched for the .11 version of the driver and actually found it on the MSI web pages. I just picked a random laptop, downloaded the driver, checked the MemoryStick version and matched it to .11, then did an "update driver" in control panel for the Memory Stick device. It made me reboot, and now it seems to be working with both my 256KB & 4GB sticks (still testing, but looking good so far).

The latest driver on the Lenovo site was the .10 version and did NOT work for me.

Here's a random laptop driver page from the MSI web pages that has the .11 driver included -> http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func ... od_no=1326

If you're using XP, MS has identified this as a known issue with SDHC cards that are 4GB or more. MS has issues a hot fix for both Vista and XP.

Thanks ziarim, that is good info. It looks like the updated .11 driver works for my SanDisk 4GB memory stick pro duo as I have done a bunch of testing and can't make it stop working anymore.

Okay well final note, it doesn't work. I can now use the memory stick as a storage device, reading and writing to it, but when I take pictures and then put it in the slot, it doesn't work. It can read the directories, but I can't copy the files.

So at this point, I've decided to just punt and keep using my USB adapter since I'm hitting a diminishing return on investment here.

My experience is "similar". I have an 8GB SDHC card. If I plug the card into the reader on my T61p , I cannot copy a large amount of data to the card ("large" is > 2GB in my case). I get a "Delayed Write Failed" message as if I had removed the card without doing a "safely remove hardware". I've tried this with the .10 and .11 drivers.

If I put the same card into my SanDisk MobileMate SD+ reader and plug it into a USB slot, everything works fine. I tried this using the same set of files each time.

This is under Windows XP SP3 running my "drivers only" (no ThinkPad software except for Power Manamgent) install.
