USB drives disbaled when resuming from standby on X41 w/ X4

#1 Post by johnd04 » Wed Jul 23, 2008 7:18 pm

I have a X41 Tablet with X4 dock running XP SP3 Tablet PC edition with an external hard drive and DVD drive connected to the X4 dock. Recently whenever I Undock -> Standby -> re-Dock -> Resume from Standby, the 2 drives do not function without restarting Windows. When I go into device manager I get the yellow exclamation points on the two USB Mass Storage Devices with the following error:

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38 )"

Any ideas? I have been searching for an answer for months. This started occurring only recently under SP2. Upgrading to SP3 did not fix the problem.

i would think that dock/undock is causing this, not standby. maybe the usb host is sending a soft disconnect signal to attached devices during dock/undock to prepare for changes in power source for the usb bus?

Good point. I had assumed the problem was standby, not the undock. I will investigate further.

@gongo2k1: You were correct, the problem was due to undocking, not standby.

I have not found a solution, but for now I've found that safely ejecting the USB devices before undocking prevents me from getting the error when I re-dock.
