R60 very nice

#1 Post by asiafish » Thu Jul 24, 2008 12:16 am

I've always owned T and X series ThinkPads (and a smattering of Macs) and finally wound up with a14" XGA R60 as my main writing machine. It is as basic as they come, with a Celeron processor and integrated graphics, but the build-quality on this is actually better than my last T60p. Its a bit heavier, but overall a very nice, and still portable machine. Nothing budget at all about the materials and construction.

I can't disagree with anything you've said. My R60 is almost two years old, It still runs great and looks pretty good as compared to what a two year old Dell or HP looks like. I haven't had a single issue with mine. Every time I ponder an upgrade, I can't really come up with a compelling reason to do so. The only issue I've had with it is the screen dimness. The PQ is fine for my uses, but I wish it it was a bit brighter and the angles are thin like most notebooks. My last notebook was a IPS T42 so perhaps everything else is just inferior.

From an R-series lover, complete agreement.

And the differences between the R61 and T61's are even less. R-series machines are definitely worth a look.

Actually my R60 screen is brighter than any other ThinkPad screen I've ever had.

I have the Boe-Hydis panel on my R60. My T42 was definitely brighter. It's not horrible, but I'd like the brightness range to be higher. On the lowest settings it's not comfortable to use in my opinion.

I didn' t have much experience or interest in the Rs until my school district issued us R60s a year and a half ago. I really liked it's build quality and solid feel. And after I did an "unauthorized" RAM upgrade to 1Gb (instead of the as ordered 512Mb), it runs well too.

The only issues that it exhibits have to do with our crappy network and what our IT department does to them because they are paranoid and run by an idiot Network Guy! ..... but that's another story.

So, overall, the Rs have earned my respect after years of using Ts.

The R series hasn't always been so well built. I've had two R50p's since summer 2007 (sold one of them last month), and in the last few days I've been playing with a 14.1" R32 and a 14.1" 390X, which was the direct predecessor to the R series. All four machines feel somewhat fragile and must be handled very gently. IMO, they aren't much better than Dell's early Inspirons as far as build quality is concerned.

By contrast, the current R series is much much more solid. One of my coworkers bought a 15.4" 1680x1050 R61 several months ago, and another one bought a 14.1" 1440x900 R61i just last week. Both are impressively sturdy.

The problem recently is that there isn't much of a price-break compared to a comparable T, probably because there is very little difference anymore. I priced out an R61 14" and a T61 14" about a month ago (before buying the R60) and they were less than $200 apart.
