WiFi Card issues on a T30

#1 Post by schen » Thu Jul 24, 2008 10:42 am

I have a T30 that I've been cleaning up to sell. Everything has gone fine on it through the load of the restore disk, etc. .... right up till I tried to install a WiFi card.

I tried an Atheros chipped card (a common T60H786) that I had on hand using the 1802/01C9 hack that I've used on several ThinkPads in the past and it keeps telling me that it "failed to write Eeprom". I've also tried an Intel/IBM 2100 card that I bought from Ed, just for this reason and it still spits up.

Anyone have any ideas other than finding an original T30 card (which at this point, I'm not certain that, that'll even work)!

Hi schen,
What version is your BIOS & ECP ?
I've installed wifi on several T30's and encountered no problems by first upgrading BIOS & ECP to most recent versions (Bios 2.10 - Ecp 1.07) and then patching the 1802 thingy.

*EDIT* : If you need to upgrade BIOS/ECP the 1802/01C9 patches need to be re-applied after the upgrade !

The cards I use are regular Intel 2200BG cards and they work OK.

HTH.

I'll check on the ECP, but I upgraded the BIOS already so that's not it. I previously used a T30 as my regular machine and was able to get it working with a definitely non-IBM Atheros a/b/g card without an issue, so this has been a head-scratcher.

Yup, both the BIOS and ECP are updated to the latest versions (BIOS 2.10, ECP 1.07), so that shouldn't be a problem. The machine runs fine with the IBM Hi-Rate "B" combo card which I suppose I can use.

But it's just weird that the hack which I've used and have had work on other T30s won't on this machine. :?

Thanks for the thought though.

Ok, googled for "failed to write Eeprom" but nothing relevant there ... some other questions then ...

When exactly do you get this 'eeprom' message with the atheros (boot - driver install - try to work it) ?

Does the Intel/IBM gets you the same message or something different (and at what point in time) ?

Are you sure the cards are not defective (i.e. can you check their operability on another machine at hand - the fact that the card worked in the past is not always a guarantee that it is still operational now) ?

I actually get the eeprom message with either the Atheros or the Intel. I haven't tried the Intel in another machine yet, but I have put the Atheros in an A31 where it recognized without an issue.

I'm curious Schen--are you installing the hack with the card installed or without? I had a weird experience with my 2200BG that begs the question.
