ST9160823AS - SEAGATE 7200.2 Momentus and T60

#1 Post by wayneforrest » Fri Jul 25, 2008 2:16 am

I have purchased a new drive (Seagate Momentus 7200.2) for my T60 and I am concerned about two things:

1) Warranty, am I still covered (I Replaced the Drive myself) ?
2) The ST9160823AS Seagate drive is not one from IBM, is it compatible and does it support the ACTIVE Protection System.

"When I use the Active Protection System Software from IBM"
I do notice that the icon changes in the SYSTEM Tray to paused
sate when I move the Laptop;

Does this mean (1) or (2) :

(1)
The system "PAUSED the DRIVE" successfully. :)

(2)
Or does it mean I has sensed motion and issued the "PAUSE COMMAND". (Possibly not pausing the drive.) :(

Thank you.

1) Yes, you can change it. It will not void the warranty
2) Don't use a drive within active protection if you Thinkpad already have it. It will lead the hard drive to go in safe/park mode and the Thinkpad to ask him to go in safe/park mode. So, any move from the laptop will stop the drive.

wayneforrest: How´s the performance of the Momentus drive? I´m considering buying a similar model (Seagate Momentus 7200.3 ST9250421AS ) myself.

Findings on my Seagate

I have installed the drive, and it does make a difference;
it is definitely *faster*, and a slight bit louder than my old drive.

My boot speed is not much faster, but I think that is due to all the
applications I have installed and Nod32 and the Power manager;
after that my machine very responsive; I use it every day to
develop software ( ASP.NET / J2ME and Win32 applications).

I have also discovered that the drive does respond to movements;

The T60 detects motion and "pauses" the drive; I discovered this
while playing music with media player, I played music and moved my T60 and the music paused for a few seconds and continued playing.

*thank you for the replies*; I am glad to here that my warranty is still covered. :D
