fan problem - again! ... wtf ?

#1 Post by SFR75 » Fri Jul 25, 2008 12:48 pm

It seems that cooling system is dead again. I don't feel fan spinning and system overheats and hangs dead. It's second time in two years that that happend. So much for IBM realiability - really!

Since it's unlikely that IBM manufactured the fan itself, I would point out that their only reliability issue is one of making a poor choice where fan vendors are concerned.

If the fan motor/impeller subassembly is an off-the-shelf part, you could probably get a much higher quality replacement by browsing the catalogs of the big electronic supply houses.

I did this quite a bit in the 90's with PC power supplies, because the manufacturers of such would almost always build cheesy, sleeve-bearing fans into them (I'd replace them with high-quality ball-bearing units, usually new/old-stock from the surplus market). I still do it today, if I don't like the look of the fan in any given device.

Happy tweaking.
