A22M Power/Boot Problems

#1 Post by jjackson02 » Thu Dec 23, 2004 4:33 pm

Recently my A22M has been acting up when I attempt to start it. I'll press the power button and the lights will flash... the laptop makes a noise which sounds kind of like reading from a floppy drive for a second, and it shuts off...even the battery charging light goes off when this happens. A few mintues ago I depressed the power button and the power LED illuminated and stayed lit without any pc activity. Every so often though, it will boot up. It's very weird. I've removed the battery and the behaviour persists.

If anyone has experienced this situation or has any relevant information it would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Jason

Jason,

Gabhaim pardún agaibh as an teachtaireacht seo i mBéarla.

Change the CMOS battery! It's in the memory compartment.

Not sure I agree with all of that but since it's James, it must be correct.

I've had a problem locating the CMOS battery on my A22m. I've removed the cover for the memory compartment as well as the memory itself. I can't find the CMOS battery. :?

EDITED**

Have found the battery after consulting the IBM support site.
Thanks though!

My A22m had the similar problem as you do, after reading some articles in other forum. They say that it is the failure of the power management ic ADP3421 and the ADP3410. They are surface mount on the motherboard. When I first get the problem, I first think that re-seating the cpu will solve the problem. It works for a short period but fail again. I am looking to buy these two power management chips and unsoldered the one on the board and replace them. Many T21, A2* have this problem.

I have the same situation, just started, with an A21m. I started a thread here http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=6767 but there are no replies.

The responses here suggest the CMOS battery might be the problem, then that the culprits are the power management chips ("it is the failure of the power management ic ADP3421 and the ADP3410").

Can anyone say which it is and what might be done?

Also, I've looked in the memory compartment for the CMOS battery but do not see it there. If it is the problem, can anyone say where it is on an A21m?

Many thanks--

Open the other compartment, you'll see two wires, red and black, on the inboard side. One end of the pair is attached to a little white plug, the other to a little round battery in a plastic jacket, tucked under the edge of the case.

But many thanks anyway. Now I have to figure out how to buy one of these. The battery itself is conventional, I understand, but is the packaging also standard?

Where did you get the new battery?

I figure to try and replace mine, but where did you find the battery and it's "housing" (the yellow plastic shinkwrap and the wires to plug it in)?

i was so careful (scared?) taking out the old battery that I was to reuse the yellow plastic packaging. Computer boots, runs 12 minutes, dies.

Was not, apparently, the CMOS.

jjackson--

is your machine still running perfectly? I chgd cmos but that doesn't seem to have solved the problem at all. 12 minutes and sudden death is all i'm getting out of my a21m.
