T41 Ati9000

#1 Post by ircr » Sun Jul 27, 2008 1:32 pm

I can get a cheap T41 with Intel Pentium 1,7 M, 1,5 GB memory, 60 GB hard drive, Ati Radeon 9000 Mobile 32MB and 14'' LCD with 1400x1050.

Will this graphic card work well on that resolution?

Thanks

Yes. I'm using that resolution with an ATI 7500.

It will work well enough, stay away from Vista with it, though.

Vista sux. I'm happy with XP. I'll need time to adjust my eyes from 1024 to 1440 hehe.

My A31 (not A31p) runs 1400 X 1050 just fine with XP Pro. It has a lesser ATI and less video memory.

Your T41, with that nice and fast CPU, should be quite snappy.

Hey George...Just wondering why you would say this?
The girlfriends T41 with 1.5Ghz cpu and 1.5Gig ram,40gig 5400rpm,ATI9000 video (SXGA+)runs Vista nicely.

Now it's not the fastest there is but with Vista SP1 it updates the ATI9000 drivers to newer ones and run's everything fine.
I cant use Vista's Aero because of only 32megs video.

In fact i have a P-4 3.0Ghz,desktop computer with vista and besides the 256meg (desktop) and the 32 meg (Thinkpad) theres not a big lot of diffrence in how vista run's.

Vista is a resource hog IMHO. I've tested it on machines way more powerful than the one in question, and wasn't pleased whatsoever.

Vista in any shape and form requires at least a Core Duo CPU.

My opinion only.

I ran Vista Ultimate on my old maxed out 2GHz T41p. It ran acceptably but killed by battery life. Because if the 128MB GPU Aero ran nicely and since I had 2GB of RAM and fast 7200RPM HD the rest of the system was pretty snappy.

I tried Vista on my T42 (1.7GHz, 1GB, 32MB Radeon) and it blows hard. I know it's mainly due to the GPU, and I can't help but wonder if SP1 would help in other area's.

Vista is happy on C2D systems to be sure, but a nice fast PM system is quite capable of running it at an acceptable speed.

I've tested Vista on both my wife's T42p and my T43p. Both of these had 7200rpm drives and 2Gb RAM each.

Did it run? Sure did, but like XP in a low gear.

The only machine that I've ever owned that run Vista up to my expectations was T61p, with 4Gb of RAM and 7200rpm drive.

Maybe I expect too much...

I'm a late adopter with Windows. I ran 2000 Pro until my side business (Unlocking cell phones) forced me to upgrade to XP. Having tweaked XP to my likings for so long, coupled with disliking the times I've worked with Vista for customers at work, makes me want to delay the switch as long as possible. Plus my current machine wouldn't run it very well anyway

For the original poster, the 9000 graphics run very nicely on XP. As mentioned above, plenty of people run the high res screen on a 7500 card without issues as well.

I got my thinkpad today and it's the best. 8)

I have this hard drive http://www.directron.com/08k0939.html with 60GB space and 7200 rpm. I want to buy a new hard drive about 120 GB that will be quiet and ''cold''. Who do you recommend... WD, Samsung, Seagate??? Should I take a 7200 drive or 5400.

If you find a 120 GB 7200 RPM drive for sale, you let me know so I can buy one too. Anything above 60 GB has been really tough to find for a while now.

You know the new 250GB drives on a 5400RPM mechanism are really darned speedy due to the increased areal density of the platters. I am running a 160GB version and it feels just as fast as any 7200RPM drive I have owned in the past.

Just a thought.

My T41p runs Vista Ultimate very fast at the same level as XP.

What you need is alot of memory, more than 1.5GB and it will be fast.
IBM Thinkpad T41P Special Edition Dothan 2.1GHz, IBM 100GB 7200RPM HD, 2GB Corsair.
LENOVO Thinkpad W510, i7-820QM, 4GB, Full HD 1920x1080, 320GB HDD 7200RPM
