Latch failures

#1 Post by novasource » Tue Jul 29, 2008 9:17 am

I am already on my second latch failure with my X60 tablet that I've had since May 2007. Fortunately I have some kind of extended warranty that goes through 2010. (Employer-owned laptop.)

I've opened another case with Lenovo so that I can be without it for 2-3 days while Solectron in Memphis tries to fix it...

Other than the latch, my laptop shows no signs of damage or abuse whatsoever. It's very clean.

Has anyone experienced latch failures? What do I need to watch for?

My latch failed a few months ago. In addition to being able to latch both ways (to support tablet-mode), it also could be pulled all the way out. Then one day, the latch just disappeared.

Because it was the middle of the semester, I just let it be and continued using the Waterfield sleeve that keeps it closed-tight and protected. I will be sending it in for repair soon (or possibly finding an authorized repair center nearby to minimize downtime) because I am also experiencing the unglued bezel issue.

This tablet was originally purchased last summer, and has been sent in for repair once for the bezel issue (when it was still a new issue and before the final working fix was known).

Never had a latch failure and I am taking my laptop to many classes each day and always turning and writing on it. No problems with it.

The laptop came back quickly from the Memphis Solectron facility with a fixed latch, so I guess I'm happy. It's still a hassle to have to be without it for 48 hours.

When X61T its closed, the latch seems to hold it sort of loosely. Is that normal? Thoughts?

The latch on my X60 Tablet failed several months ago - same experience as fongj (resulting in the latch being pretty useless, since it could just slip out...).

Out of curiosity, how did fixing the latch go? Did they offer to send you the part? Personally, I don't know if I can send mine in for very long (getting close to the start of the fall semester), but I looked at the Hardware Maintenance Manual and I think I'd be able to handle replacing it myself in an hour or so, if they send the part.
