Is PATA dead?

I've had two wonderful years with my Hitachi 7K100 (HTS721010G9AT00) but recently it starts to make some weird noises. When I was about to purchase another one on the same website where I did 2 yrs ago, the hard drive was gone

And I'm afraid it's gone forever

(the site always marks "temporarily out of stock" etc..)

Is it possible to purchase a brand new one elsewhere? Maybe in the US? All my three TPs are PATA based (and two of them are 2010 restricted). They are serving me well and I hope I won't have to drop them because there's no replacement hard drives.

Any help is appreciated!

I talked to Hitachi Storage today and they told me they have ceased production of ALL IDE/PATA 2.5" drives from now.

My question would be, is it possible to by a IDE-SATA adapter for the Thinkpad T41P?

I'm afraid not. (but it might be possible with an IDE-CF adapter.)

Hi aaa,

No... my T43 was an express model so it had only one year warranty which went expired in 2006. Besides, my T43 originally came with a 60GB 5400RPM HDD, the 7K100 Hitachi TS HDD I'm using is not IBM-branded. I had flashed its firmware (thanks to the guide on the forum.)

Very unlikely. People have been moving on to big 5400rpm drives though.

So are they still making 5400RPM PATA drives? How big have those become?

Actually, I meant the warranty on the hard drive itself. It's usually 3-5 years, if it had one.

There is a the WD 250gb PATA drive so I wouldn't say PATA's dead yet.

May I recommend you check out these guys:

They have many new PATA drives for laptops... many are Hitachi/IBM. I have purchased from this company many times, and even bought the hard drive that's in my TP 365x from them... a pretty good vendor IMO.

Site is pretty hard to navigate... I'm sure lots of people are jumping up and looking for 7200rpm PATA laptop drives, even though the chances of there being any are extremely slim.

OEM hitachi drives are usually one year warranty but retail hitachi drives are usually 3 year warranty.

What you have discovered - that 2.5" 7200 rpm ATA/PATA/IDE HDD's are gone - is a sad thing that seems to be worldwide

However, some users suggest/report that the newest 5400 rpm HDD's are almost as fast as the "good old" 7200 rpm ones, so that seems to be the only option.

I suggest you review the following threads 7200 rpm ATA drives and Hitachi website - 7K100, 100 GB PATA HD is unavailable and T42, Ultrabay Slim and Hitachi Travelstar 7K200-200 and T42p Hard Drive Upgrade? where these issues have been recently discussed.

Please report back if you get a new 5400 rpm HDD - I am interested in some user reports about especially clicking noise of the Western Digital Scorpio drives...

PS: If you want a real fast "HDD", then concider getting a SSD!

I just put in a WD Scorpio 250Gb/5400rpm drive 2 weeks ago in my wife's "new" R51. It's difficult for me to absolutely attribute the speed to the HDD since I haven't run any utilities, so take this for "what it's worth", anecdotal evidence: it's seems fast, very fast. I've had a couple of other R51/52s in my hands the last few months with 5400rpm drives in them, but they've been the older Hitachi 40 or 60Gb models and this is clearly faster. And it's been very quiet. So far, we've been VERY happy with the performance of the machine, especially at the $89 (no rebate) sale price of that drive at Micro Center!

It might be my imagination, hasn't somebody developed a firmware hack to fix that or is that just for Hitachi drives?

there is a firmware force-loading process, but i think there issues with the newer, larger drives. for instance, i read that a guy did the hack on a retail hitachi 5400 160gb drive but specified the 120gb (?) firmware (because there was no 160gb firmware ?) and then he ended up with the drive only reporting ~130gb with no way to recover or force the rest. now he can't flash it back to the original firmware either because it's nowhere to be had. and... the drive is throwing errors as it tries to write to the area out near the 130gb area, too. just to add insult to injury.

I wonder if you could you something like Partition Magic before-hand and set it up to where you could use the rest of the disk, although I doubt that it would have an effect through the firmware updates though.

It's too bad. That's actually one of the reasons why I stayed away from the T43. I have a perfectly good (less than a month old) 7200rpm 80Gb hard drive and didn't want to give it up.

Well luckily I have 2 pata 2.5 drives at home. 1 as brand new from a local shop western digital 40gb. And one was used from ebay 30gb..

Good deal on 160gb ide. Anyhow,

But I have a r40e. Used from ebay. It's arriving on monday. But since the ultrabay thing was brought up I have to ask. The r40e has a built in cd or dvd drive from my research. But the r40e doesn't have an ultrabay right? Or does it?

He has 100% positive 1065 feedbacks. Brand new 2.5 ide Seagate Factory Sealed with warentee 160gb hard drive. Only 68 dollars. Almost half of the 120 you paid. And 60gb extra.

you won't find a brand new 7200rpm, 100gb hitachi-brand, ibm/lenovo fru for $60, though. they are getting very scarce, especially the fru drives.

those of us who run t43's are limited to which drives we can put in our primary drive bays without incurring the '2010' boot error. or we need to jump through non-sanctioned, drive firmware update procedures with another, limited drive population.

doesn't help me as a primary boot device. i need my ub available for multiple devices... 2nd hd, burner, battery. i am considering the sata adapter and a big sata drive as a removable data volume, though.

Hint to those who seek a 2.5" 7200 rpm PATA/ATA/IDE HDD (for use in T4x's): See the the thread Hitachi website - 7K100, 100 GB PATA HD is unavailable (see the posts of Thu Jun 12, 2008 9:33 pm and Mon Jun 23, 2008 5:26 pm) and use Google to search for the FRU's mentioned there and/or the Seagate HDD part-numbers... and you will find e.g. this site who just two days ago still offered new (!) 100 GB Hitachi 39T2585 for $120 + shipping. Interesting 7200 rpm 2.5" PATA Hitachi parts are:

13N6806 = 13N6807 = 13N6799 = 08K0849 = HTS726060M9AT00 = 60 GB

39T2582 = 39T2583 = 39T2561 = 0A26563 = HTS721080G9AT00 = 80 GB
