Loose AC adapter plug?

#1 Post by ochang12 » Fri Dec 24, 2004 5:04 am

Ok, another thing I noticed with the new T42, the AC jack in the back is a little loose. It can slip out of the back maybe an 1/8th of an inch with the slightest tug, and seems to jiggle a bit. Anyone else notice the same?

My old T20 never had this problem, the jack locks in pretty tightly...

Same loosenes on my T41. Like you, the plug on my prior T23 and T30 were tight. ... JD Hurst

Yup.

I too had a T30 prior to this T42p ... That was solid as a rock, however this new T42p does feel really loose... I have accidental damage coverage - so if it breaks, I'll just make IBM fix it.

A20p had much better fit for the plug too. Now I had just got used to it and never I had any further problem either...

I too have the same issue with my T42p. When I first received it, I thought it was a critical manufacturing flaw--I wouldn't want the plug to slip out.

Just as the other posters, the AC adapter plug does not go in completely and there is always about a 1/8 inch gap between plug and hole so that the metal from the plug is exposed. I can also pull it out another 1/8 inch with the slighest pull, so it may be because the bulb locks on to the notch on the adapter plug.

I have pulled the wire on occasion and I don't like how wobbly the plug is in the hole. Sometimes I worry that it will displace the plug and leave the T42p non-functional. Has anyone found a fix or has IBM/Lenovo improved it? Has this gap led to anyone losing functionality on their T series?

If you tripped over the cable, you would want it to slip out!

Words of wisdom. :D

As long as it doesn't lose the AC power due to these small jiggles, it's fine. My friend had a laptop (not a Thinkpad) where even the slightest move of the AC jack would cause him to lose power. It was annoying.

Mine are both loose, I think bill bolton is right, the plug is mounted loosley to prevent broken solder joints when the cord is kicked out. Mines been kicked out numerous times and is fine.

I don't think this is the case, because I have half a year old t43p and the cord is plugged in pretty tight. I guess if I would trip the cable lappy would just fly away. Not good!
But I think it would be nice if they would figure out something like Apple's MagSafe connector.

The power connector on the T4X is not soldered to the board, it is attached via a screw to the horizontal cross member that goes across the back of the laptop.

The connector has a plug in, into the motherboard, if you do break it; it is easy to replace.

Like I has posted more than 1 year ago... the plug on T42 is much loose than other previous thinkpads, however after one year and a half I still never had the case were it has accidentally got disconnected just once!

I would not worry about it.

Having tripped over my cord a couple of times without (yet) a disaster, I think the new Apple laptop has the best idea of all--a magnetic power connection that's easy to break, and doesn't involve a "plug". Every laptop manufacturer should do that!

My T42 has the jiggle problem. It was loose when I got it, and got way worse over time. I'm going to send it in as its under warranty for another 2 years, however my desktop is outta commission and as an addict I can't be without a computer for more than a few days. Note my previous thread on this topic (which was mostly annoyed I think due to the bad subject) here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=15437

Thank you, guys, for pointing out that Mac magnetic connection - how cool! (Now, if Apple can just figure out how to put a 2nd mouse button on their machines)

That is the kind of innovation that I EXPECT from the company that delivered the butter-fly keyboard many, many years ago.

this is to all of you,

Send your machine to service and it will be fixed for free unless customer damaged.
It might result in the battery not charging if the plug becomes to loose. T30 and previous has an I/O bracket where all ports are soldered.
