X32 expensive!! more so than X40 series.
Can someone explain why X32 is so expensive, way more than X40s. I have recently aquired an S30 and I love it but 10" screen is a bit hard on my old eyes. So I was considering an X32 but wow when I saw prices on eBay I was shocked.

Because the x40/x41 series is not newer or better performing than the X31/32 (not the X30, which is older).
The x4x was designed for ultimate portability with a newer case design also used in the later x6x series. However, it uses intergrated video, has a slow 1.8" hard drive, and generally underperforms an X31 or X32 with similar specs.
The x3x were designed as high performance ultraportables, suitable for use in a docking station, with discrete ATI video (albeit the limited 7000 series, not the better 7500), and a 2.5" hard drive.
There's still plenty of demand for the X32, and very few units around, particularly for the higher spec'd 2.0Ghz Pentium M versions, that's why the second hand price is quite high.

I find myself tempted to try to get a refurbed X32 machine. Here in my country there are people selling machines with little to no use, T42's, T43's, X31's, but no word on X32's. It could be worth to replace my T42p, I currently do not need the powerful yet old GPU, I'm on my last semester of engineering and I'd like an ultraportable to go with it.
Some X31 offered by some dude here in Mexico contained also the Mini-Dock which is compatible with many other laptops (In my house we have also an old A22e) without optical drive.
I would be thrilled if I could find a 'mint' X32. Only thing that would regret is going to back to XGA resolution. In the future plan to get a monster 15.4" WUXGA T61p or newer.

They are rare...to begin with...for a machine of that age.
Put it this way: it's one of the very few ThinkPads I had always wanted and have never owned. There's about three more in that group...
And, yes, X32 will blow any X40/41 to pieces when it comes to performance. For that fact, a properly upgraded X31 will do the same. But there's no denying that if you want the ultimate portability in a newer ThinkPad for under $500, X40/41 is the way to go...

There are 4 on eBay right now. 2 are 1.7s and are $620.00 and 2 are 1.8s, and they are $725.00, all other parts are the same.
This just seems like alot to me and out of my range for a used machine.

There are some reasons why an X60/x61 may not be suitable:RaysMD wrote:why not get a x61 then?
1) Although Lenovo let loose some X60 and X61 units at $500-$600, they're generally more expensive than an X31/32. But, if you can find an X6x cheap, go ahead, if the next two items don't matter to you.
2) Lack of discrete video. The X6x uses Intel integrated graphics, not the discrete graphics of the X31/X32...which shouldn't matter that much were it not for #3
3) No docking support other than the ultrabase. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Lenovo's specs don't say that the X60/X61 can be used with either the Dock II or newer Advanced Dock. If it could be used with an advanced dock then it can be used with a multi-head graphics card.
I don't need a very fast processor...anything newer than a Pentium IV suits me fine (Pentium M for portability), but what I do need is a huge workspace. All my thinkpads have docks, and all are attached to large multiple external monitors except when I'm on the road.
An X6x with discrete video, or at least docking support, would be ideal, but since that option doesn't exist, the next best thing is an X31/X32 with high specs.

Local usanotenook reseller actually offers X32 (1.8GHz, 1GB RAM), with warranty to 02/2009 for ~750 USD (just divide it by 2 to get comparable non-EU price). I'm getting tempted
On the other hand I'd like to try X60/X61 because I could use internal WWAN module (GPRS/EDGE only but better than nothing).

Well, I finaly bit the bullet and bought an X32 from BobA on this forum and I am certainly not disapointed. It arrived today and I cannot fault it, cosmeticaly it is as good as new and as he built it with what I wanted, including the X3 base with DVD, bluetooth abg wifi 7200 rpm drive and to cap it all a 2gig processor, it is just perfect (for my needs) I would certainly recomend him as a seller of quality merchandise.

$510 -- X32, PM 2.0GHz, 1G/PC2700, 60G/7200rpm, 802.11abg WiFi
Plus $65.00 for MediaSlice with CDRW\DVD and Bluetooth.
The prices are US Dollars, thats what he deals in, you can work it out as cad dollar changes daily. There is even a couple of months warranty left. Not sure if it's renewable but I will be checking it out.
