I want to place a new hard drive on my T42, suggestions?

Hi there,

I into the market for a new hard drive for my ThinkPad T42. At the moment it has a (originally came with the notebook) Fujitsu Siemens 40Gb 5400rpm IDE 2,5" drive (MHT2040AH).

I'm looking for a (2,5" off course):
7200RPM (my main priority)
IDE
80gb (60gb is also ok, but rather 100gb if 80 is not an option)
And IBM must support it (update's etc.)

Experts: do you have ant suggestions?

I did a little (google) research an found i'll guess a very good option:
Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 80Gb IDE drive.

But all the webshops i'll visit, doesn' t have it on stock! Do you know if and where it is on stock. (additional info: i'm living in the netherlands).

Than another question:
When i'll make my decision, and the drive arrives. How can i put my op sys, other software, data and R&R on the new drive.
I came up with a little idea:
I'll use the boot cd that i've made in acronis and from my exHD i'll put my back-up (made with acronis 10) on the new drive. Is this the right way of doing it?
ANd, when i'll do it like that does it have any consequences on my software. I mean does windows knows it's about a originally windows and office. And is Kaspersky still getting the updates on the new drive?

Get a WD 250GB. The 7K100 has been discontinued and is too hard to find.

I don't know how relevant this is in the Netherlands, but:

I use that exact disk - the 80 gig 7K100 - in my T42. I purchased it slightly used on eBay from a lady who needed more room and had replaced it with a larger-capacity model.

It's been performing well for a couple years, and has proven to be a good acquisition.

+1 on aaa's suggestion for the wd 5400rpm 250gb. if you don't like wd, you may be able to find a hitachi 5400rpm 160gb.

the premium on the 7200rpm drives is too high unless you get really lucky and almost all drives you'll find are used and so, may be of questionable warranty.

by many accounts, the newest 5400's are just about as fast in real-world performance. and... since you're on a t42, you don't need to worry about the '2010' error like us t43 drivers do.

I just upgraded mine to a WD250GB, when bootup, it says the HDD may not be compatible, I set it to flash the message, other then that it seems to work well.

Any idea to get rid of the warning permantantly?

the only way to remove the message permanently is by flashing the drive with ibm/lenovo firmware, which only exists for certain drives.

I'm using this drive on a T42 and it works great. I have 3 other T41/T42s that are running Hitachi 7200RPM drives and there is not much difference.

Access times in the 7200rpm driver is superior to the 5400rpm WD drive.

Just check any tests on the net, the WD 5400rpm is slower in all areas.

Yes it is slower - but in my experience, not enough slower to notice without a benchmark run.

Took advantage of my state's tax-free holiday weekend and picked up the 250G Scorpio 5400rpm PATA drive for $89.99. 232 gigs after being formatted.*

Cloning my 40G hard drive was a snap using a usb 2.5" external enclosure and Apricorn EZ Gig.

can a t42 take a 320gb wd drive from a wd passport external (WD3200BEVT 320G 8M cache, SATA-2)?

BTW - every 9.5mm PATA (IDE) drive works in a T42 - so get whatever you want. If you can find/afford a 7200rpm and it is large enough for you - get it. Otherwise, I have found the WD 250GB to be quite respectable in performance.
