Is there any service organization with T22 Thinkpad experience, (or a forum member willing to help) in the central New Jersey area (New Brunswick to Trenton)?

I'm trying to extract a tarball and I get the following error..

tar: Invalid tar magic

My syntax is tar -xzvf file.tar.gz

Any thoughts?
