Capacity and speed difference / Hitachi Travelstar 7k200

#1 Post by zodiac » Fri Aug 01, 2008 1:44 pm

Hello,

I was pretty much already buying a Hitachi Travelstar 7k200 with a capacity of 160 GB, when I read, that there is actually a difference of transfer rate amongst the serie.

The 80, 120 and 160 GB versions have a theoretical transfer rate of 695 Mbit / sec.

while

the 100 and 200 GB version have a theoretical transfer rate of
850 Mbit / sec., which is an increase of 20%.

Now my question is: Do you guys think, this difference is really worth it buying an in my case undersized HDD (100 GB) / oversized HDD (200 GB) and therefore maybe spending a few extra bucks?

Will the faster version really be noticably faster?

Thanks and have a good weekend!
Martin

I really don't care that much about the minimal difference in transfer rates. For example old 7K100 are slower than its SATA counterparts. I believe the reasons to upgrade may vary from user to user

If you come from a 5400rpm then a 7200rpm upgrade is a nice thing to do. I wouldn't worry about the disk capacity as long as is 7200rpm. And I have 100% trust in Hitachi.

It´s not only the raw rpm that make a difference. A 5400 rpm drive with higher capacity could have better performance than 7200 rpm drive due to higher density. If I was you, I would go for the 200 GB. Capacity is never enough ;)
