Thinkpad T60 update kills machine

#1 Post by sumant.deshbhatar » Mon Aug 04, 2008 3:03 pm

Good Evening
As a Novice user of the forum please excuse me if I ask a question that has already been asked and answered. I was updating my T-60 laptop with the latest updated from Lenovo and one of the updates was for the BIOS.
The problem occurred when it was installing the new BIOS and something happened and it quit updating the BIOS. When I restarted the machine it wont boot, no display, no sound. Nothing at all. The processor is running and the hard disk makes some noise. I pulled out the HDD and it smelled like it was burnt but I am not sure about it. Any ideas on what could have gone wrong, is there anything I can do to revert it back, did any of you guys face such an issue?
As I have stated earlier please excuse and direct me to the post if this questions has already been answered. Thank you very much in advance for your help.

Welcome to the forum!

Let's try this: remove the battery, unplug the AC adapter and press the "power" button ten times in a row, holding it down for 10 seconds each time, and 30 seconds the last time around.

Plug the AC adapter back in and try to power on...

Good luck and let us know.

But without any power from the Battery and the AC Adapter how will the machine work or even affect the system?

The above is simply a way of attempting to reset the BIOS, enough that your machine might boot again. At this point you have a dead mother board, and a replacement is your only other option from Lenovo.

Did you attempt to upgrade from a 64 bit OS, or with the BIOS password protected? Have you unplugged everything attached to your Thinkpad?

I havent tried the above option yet, but will do so by the evening.
I am not sure I understood the question that you asked about the 64 bit OS or the password protected BIOS.

Lenovo offers two ways of updating the BIOS, the **preferred** way is by burning a CD and booting with the CD. This basically works for everything. The second option is a program that will run within windows. This option is far more risky, and you're told to shut all other programs down, and NOT to run it if you have a 64 Bit OS like windows XP or Vista XP...

- If Windows Vista 64-bit is already installed on your system, then you must use the bootable CD ISO format of this BIOS update.

If you needed to enter a password, or swipe your finger to get to the BIOS setting screens then the BIOS had a password.

If you attempted to upgrade the BIOS from a 64 BIT OS like Vista 64 bit, or you attempted to upgrade the BIOS with a password on the BIOS you failed to follow directions and Lenovo will most likely attempt to bill you for a new motherboard.

Thank you for the update. I had no idea about the process that one has to take in case of the 64 bit Vista system.
I updated my BIOS within windows XP with out booting or entering any password. I had closed all the running programs and also attached the Power supply adapter to make sure the laptop does not run out of power, but somehow the installation errored out. During the installation i even saw that the process was making a backup of the BIOS before flashing it.
After all this was done I restarted my machine and nothing came up on the screen, no windows no lenovo now BIOS basically.
So essentially my BIOS is burned out and I am not sure if there is a way to return it back to normal or reset it. I guess my only option is to send it back to Lenovo for a mistake they did and pushed in their updates.
