No 30" monitor support

#1 Post by jonathanmedwards » Tue Aug 05, 2008 5:16 pm

According to the tabook specs, none of the new T/W models can support external DVI at more than 2048x1536, even via the DisplayPort-DVI adapter. I find this very disappointing, and particularly pathetic for the "workstation class" W500.

I am pretty sure that the W series will support WQXGA through the dock (if not directly). Even current T61/p models do this easily and without issues.
Now: T60 2613-EKU | T23 2647-9NU | 600X 2645-9FU | HP 100LX
Past: X31 2673-Y13 | T41 2374-3HU | T22 2647-AEU

Rules of the road :thumbs-UP:

Well the tabook doesn't say anything about external resolution for the older T models, but for the T400/500 it says "DVI pass-through support to optional Advanced Mini Dock or Advanced Dock; Maximum external resolution: 2048x1536@75Hz"

W500 says "digital monitor support via DisplayPort (supports single-link DVI-D via cable 45J7915); Maximum external resolution: 2048x1536@75Hz"

Sounds pretty definite.

as was said, even the OLD thinkpads doesn't mention WQXGA resolutions but it supported it just fine. Some of the T4x said they supported 1284 x 1024 resolution via the dock yet they went as high as 1600 x 1200.

My point is just don't trust that information as NONE of the currect machines state they support WQXGA but they do.
Current - Thinkpad T410si - Core i3 330m, 4GB, 250GB 5400RPM, WXGA+, FPR, BT, Camera, DVDRW, Gobi2000, Win7 Pro x32
Past - Thinkpad T410 - T400 - T61 - T60 - T43 - T42 - T41 - T40 - T23 - 600X

Dude,

you know it is 2048x1536@75Hz

You will be using 60hz

so the resolution will be higher

Not that simple. You need dual-link DVI for WXQGA. They tell us explicitly we can only get single-link out of the DisplayPort. The question is on the dock pass-through.
Even if they support dual-link passthrough,
WXQGA @ 60hz is still higher bandwidth than the stated limit.

We'll have to wait and see. I remember on the T41 where getting 1920x1200 out of the DVI was not officially supported, but you could do it by using a modded ATI driver.

1 hour and 5 minutes on the phone with 4 different people at Lenovo/IBM, and I still haven't found out if the T400 with the Advanced Mini Dock supports dual-link DVI. :(

The last guy I talked to took my email address and said he'd look into it, but I'm not very hopeful.

The specs for the ATI chip are encouraging: http://ati.amd.com/products/mobilityrad ... pecs.html". Would not be surprised if a modified ATI driver is needed to enable it.

30" Monitor / T500 Advanced Dock / 2560 x 1600

This configuration works perfectly. The advanced dock has dual link dvi out.

enjoy

Excellent - thanks for letting us know, rgrossha. It is plausible that the T400 will work too.

Is that with integrated (X4500HD) graphics, or discrete (ATI Mobility Radeon 3650)?

Thanks!

Confirmed: T400 (discrete graphics) in minidock will drive WQXGA.

Adding this thread to the archive of misconceptions regarding maximum supported resolutions on Thinkpads caused by inaccuracies in IBM/Lenovo's Tabook / infopages.

This is one of the very few things in the Tabook that I have long ago learned not to trust. :P

On switchable graphics machines - DVI only works with discrete graphics enabled (so says Lenovo - I haven' t tried it)

Discrete. I do not believe (and why would I want to?) integrated graphics will work.
