POLL : SHOULD I BUY OR NOT BUY ???

#1 Post by yhlin » Tue Aug 05, 2008 10:35 pm

Alright... so, Im hoping for some emotional support.

There's a local seller with this offer and, even though I already have a perfectly nice Powerbook G4 12" 1.5 Ghz, Ive always wanted an x40 or 60. Ever since I owned a T20, just loved the x series.

WINDOWS XP, PENTIUM M
CENTRINO, 1.40 GH PROCESSOR,
1.25 RAM, 40 G-HARD,
LIFETIME SYMANTEC ANTI-VIRIUS, MS 2007 OFFICE,
BATTERY (FULLY CHARGED WORKS 2 1/2 HOURS)
EXCELLENT APPEARANCE AND WORKING CONDITION

$399

So, my question to my TP-head buddies around here... should I just go for it ??? :) :)
PROSPECTIVE : Thinkpad X40 1.4Ghz 1.25RAM??
CURRENT : Powerbook G4 12" 1.5Ghz 512RAM OSX Tiger
RETIRED : T20 rockin a blazing 700mhz PIII with a massive 30 gig hd. this is monster!!! :)

You could probably find it for cheaper. If you really want it... I'm not going to stop you.

Though the X60 can be had for only a little more and will support new technologies. That's the only downfall of the X4s. It doesn't support DDR2 or SATA.
X22 - 800mhz - 640MB RAM - 60GB Hitachi 7200rpm 7k100
X40 - 1.4ghz - 1.5GB RAM - 8GB Transcend 300x CF on Addonics CF/IDE Adapter
T42p - 1.8ghz - 15" UXGA - 1GB RAM - 160GB HDD
X61t - C2D 1.6ghz - 12.1" SXGA+ - 8GB RAM - Intel G3 300GB SSD

I did an impulse buy on my X40 just less than a month ago. I had the urge to buy one and mod it to use CF cards as the main drive to make it go faster. I'm happy with the results. It was costly, but worth it.

BUT.. I realize that more solid state drives are going to come out eventually in the next 6-12months and they'll most likely be mainly SATA and 2.5" instead of 1.8". Also, DDR memory isn't cheap (though your option is already maxed).

I am happy with my purchase. I never liked the changes they made to the keyboard on the X6. I had an X60s at a previous job and it was nice and expensive (2 years ago).

If you know all it's limitations and you don't mind, go for it. It's only money..

It IS a very nice looking laptop. :D

yo ace,

quick question... how hot does your x40 run when you're just browsing internet, emailing, chatting, and music? does the fan come on?

the problem with these macs is that they run [censored] hot and the fan just cranks on like a turbine.

Do 350$ cash. My X31 was 308 and I bought 1GB of more ram for 40$ more. I can't tell what model it is by the specs, but if its an X40, the price is good.

It runs at 42c for doing light/normal tasks, at which the fan doesn't come on. That's at 27c room temperature.

I use NHC(notebook hardware control) program to undervolt my processor, so it uses even less power than the ULV processors. I cut about 10c off my temp when the processor is working hard.

At my office, it runs at 37c with probably 24c room temperature.
