It says r40e battery. But it won't fit in my TYPE 2684 - QBU S/N 99 - MXR05 0411

Is that the wrong battery? And what is the harm of running without a battery?

You want part# 92P0987. Yes you can run without a battery, but unless you are on a UPS, you'll lose data if power fails.
