Problem w/ TP R51 randomly turning off

#1 Post by SteelCurtain » Wed Aug 06, 2008 5:36 pm

Just picked up an R51. At first it would come on and then shut off. Then I started getting the 4 beeps (security chip issue, which I still don't understand). After sitting awhile I can get it to come on again. But just at random it cut back off again.

Anyone else experience this? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Since you say it will come back on after sitting awhile, I would suspect overheating.

Well I thought the same thing, but the lappy is cool as a cucumber. Plus the 4 sets of 4 beeps lead me to believe it's something else. I just can't figure out what triggers the action.

What's the 7-character model number of your R51?

Given that the machine has ATi GPU, that would be my first suspect...

Well I bit the bullet and purchased a new motherboard. But after some research, I'm not sure if I got the right one:

Lenovo show my thinkpad as:

Original description: P M 1.6GHz, 256MB RAM, 40GB 4200rpm HDD, 15 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 32MB ATI Radeon 7500, 24x24x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD, Intel 802.11b wireless(MPCI), Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), UltraNav, Secure Chip, IEEE 1394, 6c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro

It will most likely work. The fact that your LCD is XGA saves you from most of the grief...

Good luck.

Looking at the image, is that a heat sink over the GPU? My R51 doesn't seem to have that (and neither do a bunch of T4* series motherboards I have). It looks like this may be an aftermath addition? Also, any ideas what those cables over the harddisk cage do?
Cheers
