Unkown Devices in system control
Hi,
I have devices in the system control -> devices, which are not installed by Win2K:
* parallel device
* PCI device
* unknown device
Each of the device clicked on states the device type "unkown", which definitely does not ease up finding the necessary drivers. Any possibility to detect the device's names?
Thanks, Carlhermann

Hi,
well, they are recognized, but...
Windows tells me that it found a new device, which should be installed. Guess how windows names that device... "Unknown"...
The PCI device might be the MODEM, which is not installed, but wouldn't it be nice to get more than "unkown" or "PCI device" when asked for the location of the appropriate driver?
Sincerely, Carlhermann

Try loading the latest intel.inf chipset driver (get it at www.intel.com).

Hi,
I installed the Intel Chipset drivers from IBM for the T42p (Intel Chipset Support for Windows 98SE/2000/XP - TP R40, R50/p, R51 (1829, 1830, 1831, 1836, 1840, 1841), T40/p, T41/p, T42/p, X31).
I think these should be the IBM dirstributed version as also available at Intel. (Just don't want to start the discussion whether download files from the Notebook's manufacturer or the chip's manufacturer).
But that made no difference regarding the "unkown" name of the device(s).
Sincerely Carlhermann

Post your Device Manager listing. Those with the unrecognized devices will be expanded by default. Otherwise don't expand the individual categories.

Hi,
I made a printout of the device manager, which is 3 pages. Therefore I decided to post first the details given for the unknown devices:
PCI Device:
Typ: Other devices
Manufacturer: Unknown
Location: PCI-Bus 0, Gerät 31, Funktion 6
E/A: 2400-24FF
E/A: 2000-207F
IRQ: 11
unknown Device:
Typ: Other devices
Manufacturer: Unknown
Location: an Intel(R) 82801DBM LPC Interface Controller - 24CC
E/A: 004E-004F
E/A: 1630-1631
Well at least the PCI device might be the Modem, as this is listed as a PCI device in the configuration utility under "drivers not installed". But currently my Win2K crashed two times after installation of this driver (including NetWaiting and Digital Line detect). May I install the Modem only without these two "add-ons" (or are these always installed / must these by installed as automatically by setup.exe)?
I can also post the print-out of the device manager, but this might be a lot of text, which would be better posted/send as an attachment.
Sincerely, Carlhermann

I'm assuming you're using a T42p as you said in an earlier post that you tried loading the drivers for that machine....and you're using W2K, and not WXP...very interesting...and I'm sure you have your reasons. It used to be that with older ThinkPads, allowing Windows Update to update drivers was a big no-no. However, more recently, I've done just that with T22's and my T30 without any problem at all. What I would suggest is to print out your Device Manager list and then do a Windows Update and allow it to recognize and install your drivers. Compare the print-out with your new Device Manager listing...and if you want, go to IBM's site and download the drivers you want to then update. Or, download every driver that is available for your machine to begin with from the IBM site to begin with, and from within Device Manager, update your drivers, pointing them to the various folders within the Drivers folder under C:/ Eventually you'll find the correct driver for whatever it is that isn't loaded. Good luck and let us know how things went.

The main reason to use W2K is, that I have all my settings for all programs for W2K. Therefore I just transferred my system and everythings fine (except the driver/device trouble). Thus I could only upgrade to WinXP Prof. by upgrading my Win2K, not by a clean installation as I would have to if using the pre-loaded OS on my machine. For that I think I would need the installation CD, which is no longer delivered by the PC / which was most often just a recovery CD just for rebuilding the delivery installation.MadeInJapan wrote:I'm assuming you're using a T42p as you said in an earlier post that you tried loading the drivers for that machine....and you're using W2K, and not WXP...very interesting...and I'm sure you have your reasons.
For all that trouble I decided to keep the W2K. Additionally I think the difference between W2K and WinXP Prof. might not be worth the trouble to upgrade, or is it?

Actually, with SP2, I've been very impressed with WinXP Prof. The added security feature in itself is worth it....Especially for a T40 series, I would think that there would be limitations with W2K....besides, Microsoft is starting to limit its support for W2K and earlier OS's....they began by no longer supporting Internet Explorer, but my thinking is that much more will go without support before long. With that said, I think that WXP is the way to go. I used to think W2K is good enough and would only load thinkpads up with it, but after I tried WXP on a T22 (how smooth it runs!!), I've decided not to look back.
In regards to your assumption about only able to load WXP from recovery, I don't think that's exactly true....have you seen the threads about making a slip-streamed copy of XP with SP2 included? All you need is your original CD-key for it to be a legitimate copy. About your settings? I don't know what to tell you....I'm not sure if I really understand....maybe you meant that you have certain programs installed that you will lose if you format your HDD and start over.

Hi,
for example I have configured the MS-Office Taskbar with additional programs, added shortcuts for symbols in MS-Office and such stuff. Installing from a clean system, I would have to re-start implementing these modifications to the standard again. Maybe it would be worth, but...

Just out of curiousity - have you installed all the proper ThinkPad drivers from IBM?
In particular, you should visit http://www.tpdrivers.com. You'll be redirected to the proper IBM ThinkPad Drivers site. The latest driver for the supported Win* OSs may be found there.
For a T42p specifically you'll want http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-55386
For the Intel Chipset INF, you may use either the version supplied by IBM or the latest supplied directly by Intel. I'd just stick with the IBM-supplied INF files since there's really no reason not to.
For the others, download all the drivers and save to a reliable location. Burning to CD is always a good choice. You should install all of these, though you may also pick-and-choose if you are so inclined to be able to make such decisions.
As for upgrading to WinXP: Visit the very same site as above and obtain all the XP drivers. Burn them to CD for later use. If you have any Microsoft Windows XP insgtallation CD you may upgrade your existing Win2K installation. Every current ThinkPad comes with a Windows XP license and the sticker may be found on the bottom of your ThinkPad. This is a retail key for use with any retail installation CD.
You can search these forums for creating a slipstreamed XP SP2 CD from the i386 dir on your ThinkPads (prebuilt or rebuilt from HPA or recovery CD). You should be able to use this to upgrade your Win2K as well, though I have not actually tried this.

BTW: If you don't see a Win2K driver listed at http://www.tpdrivers.com for your model ThinkPad, then proper support is provided by the OS itself as provided by Microsoft. Be sure to install the drivers applicable to Win2K.
I don't see anything wrong with staying with Win2K - it is stable and has less "overhead" than WinXP. It is still the basis for many corporate desktop builds.
Be aware, though, it is five years old and Microsoft will cease support. In particular, security issues may still be found but not fixed.
