T20 hard drive adapter

I have a T20 with windows 98 SE. I installed a new hard drive and took the old Hitachi 6.0 gb drive and put in the hard drive adapter. The bios sees it. However, Windows does not recognize the drive. I updated the drive's firmware. Add new hardware wizard does not work. The device mangaer sees the second ide controller. Windows says that the hard drive adapter is working properly. Any suggestions as to what to do? I would like to be able to use the second hard drive.

I reformatted the drive in the hard drive adapater and the drive is working properly in the ultrabay . I had "wiped" the drive clean with an over write program. Windows could not recognize the drive unformatted.
