The CPU you could change, the GPU not, b/c it's soldered to the mobo.
If it makes a difference you could fit an R52 mobo
in your R51, you'd need new RAM though.

IMHO the best would be to you upgrade your Thinkpad.

Basically, what it comes down to is, if you want to change the GPU, you'll have to change the MB. Your options are as follows:

ATI GPUs- Several types, including 7500, 9000, Fire GL with memories ranging from 32Mb to 128Mb

Intel GPUs- Basically all are the integrated type that borrows memory.

That's just a basic idea. If you'll do a search on R5x Series GPUs, you'll find a number of threads that discuss the various GPUs available. One thing to look for though, is that the MBs for the 14" and the 15" machines are different.
Family Daily Drivers- T430s, T530, X220
Work- Sadly, the ThinkPads have gone away...... and replaced by HP ProDesk SFF drone machines :(
Other Projects- Edge 15, Z61m (Titanium)
Historic Retired ThinkPads- T42p, X20, A31p, 701c, 760XD, WorkPad C505

Motherboards are interchangeable between 15" and 14.1" R52 ThinkPads, at least. There is an interposer to fill the extra room in 15" models. I believe this is true with all R5x models, although I could be wrong. Search the forum for more details if you like.
