Hey everyone.

About a week ago I decided to buy myself a Laptop for college, My Birthday is this Monday so was a perfect excuse to buy one.

So I got onto ebay and found a decent prices IBM T22 which looked pretty good and came with some extras.

Anyway so the seller was local and he said he would bring it over the same day!

I paid £90.00 for
IBM T22
New Battery Fitted
CD-R Drive
DVD Drive
Floppy Drive
Mouse
Case
AC Pack
Windows XP - Official
Wifi USB

And the Specs are:

HD: 20GB
Ram: 256mb
Processor Type: Intel Pentium III
Processor Speed: 900 MHz

Which I think was a pretty good deal.
Only problem with it is Cmos Battery is dead so now waiting for new one to come in post and the guy is gonna come back and fit it for me when it arrives.

Now my main question is, The Laptop only has 1 USB port and thats used by the Wifi connector.
But I also need a USB port for my Digi Cam, Speakers & Mouse....

I have tried one of them lik doogle things that ya plug into the USB and it makes it into 4 USB ports but when I use that my Wifi Connector refuses to work I'm assuming there isn't enough power going to it or something.

I also need a USB port for my cooling pad when I buy one.

Can anyone give me any advice on what I can do about this?
The USB Divider makes it 1.1 so I'm assuming I need something 2.0 but I had a look at argos.com and I'm coming up as a loss.

Please can anyone help?

You could use a PCMCIA USB adapter. Or you could look for a powered USB hub. Go with the adapter if you need USB 2.0, and you could still add a powered hub if you need more ports. Most of the adapter cards have two ports.

So the powered USB hub I plug into the USB I have now and also the power supply from wall plug?

Looking for a USB card now but I don't think argos sell them

welcome to the forum!

your onboard usb port is limited to 1.1. you can get a usb 2.0 pcmcia card, though. you might also look into a pcmcia wifi card. from everything i've read, they far outperform the usb wifi sticks. your pcmcia slot should be able to accommodate one type III card or two type I/II cards.

yep. low speed usb. if you want 2.0 (high speed) you need to get a pcmcia card.

Ok now I'm suprized.

I have a USB Divider that splits a USB into 4X 1.1's
And when I plug my Wifi into it the light comes on but it doesn't connect.

the onboard usb port can supply 5 volts, if i recall correctly. i have no idea how much voltage is present at each of the 4 ports on your splitter device. so maybe it's just not enough to reliably power your wifi stick. personally, i'd try to get a pcmcia wifi card for the better performance. just my opinion...

a powered hub is a sure way to make sure that all of the ports have the voltage that some devices require. just remember that if you plug a usb2.0 hub (powered or otherwise) into the usb1.1 port on your t22, it will downgrade to usb1.1 speed.

re: your deal... it doesn't matter what i think as long as you're happy with it.

that said, if you look at my sig line, you'll see i had a t22, once. right now my mother is using it quite happily.

Really like the T22 it starts abit slow but once it gets going it's perfect.

Will look into the USB Hub with power supply tho.

Hehe lookin into getting a cooling pad soon aswell cause the T22 gets kinda hot.
there really good Laptops though.

Hi and welcome, I just upgraded from a T22 to a T23, I liked mine as well. I would suggest also adding another stick of RAM to upgrade to the maximum 512 MB that it can take, it makes a nice difference. I also got an 80GB hard drive for it.

I used a PCMCIA wifi adapter card and it worked flawlessly, that way you have your one USB port free. But if you need more ports then the powered hub is the way to go; but I would definitely get a PC wifi card, it is better; I got mine on ebay for $9, a Linksys.

Lastly, a cooling pad is nice, but I never got one. The T22 has a great fan, in fact lots of folks get a T22 fan for other laptops they work so well.

What would be best way to set up a cooling system?

Getting a USB Hub with power supply then using the extra USB's to power Fan?

Only fans I can find fun from USB ports.

There is one I have seen that has a Built In hub on the fan problem is it needs 2 USB ports to power it.
1 for USB hub
1 for fan.

Any advice?

For the additional accessories I would recommend a port replicator II. From the sounds of it, this would mostly be a desktop with camera, speakers, and mouse. If so, then you can use a 4 port hub and still get the usb 2.0 speed. When you want to be portable, un-dock and voila!!

that's a nice port rep. i used to have one that my father now uses.

one clarification, though... from page 5 of the on-line manual:

"(5) The Universal Serial Bus (USB) connector is for connecting a USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 device.
Note: If your ThinkPad computer does not support USB 2.0, the attached USB device does not work in USB 2.0 high-speed mode."

the t22 is only usb1.1, natively. only way to get 2.0 is with a pcmcia card.

Forget about the cooling pad, that is not necessary in your part of the world.
One important thing, NEVER lift the laptop up with one hand, especially not on the corners. You will 'flex' the motherboard if you do!

I wanna get a cooling pad cause my T22 gets VERY hot after using it for awhile.

So best thing I can think of is to get a Cooling Pad.
Plus I use the Laptop ALOT since I do webdesign and forums

Just ordered one of these.
Ebay: 220267005272

It's AC Powerd and has 7 USB 2.0's(yea I know it will go to 7 1.1's hehe)

But seems like best option for the Hub.
And it's cheaper then my local store(they sell same for £20)

I will have to double check the usb speed as when I plug my BB in to the port, it doesn't ask/alert me to use a high speed port instead.

As far as the heat, is it coming from the hdd?? My T21 is fairly cool on the lap for the duration of the battery almost two hours. My hdd is a 4200/rpm and never had any heat issues so far.

i'm just quoting the ibm reference on the capabilities of the port rep.

i just plugged my bb pearl into a usb1.1 port on my a31p and got no 'high speed' warning either. i think it's because of the way bb connects through it's own desktop software.

if you have one, try a usb2.0 memory stick. those always alert to a low speed port for me. if you've got a usb2.0 t2x, that would be quite interesting.

With your heat problems, I wonder if your fan is working at all?
Hot T2x's are a rarity!
Have you cleaned out all the dust bunnies, and cleaned the fan blades?
Make sure you apply fresh thermal paste when you clean the CPU fan.

fan seems to be working fine but bare in mind I do have it on for 6-8 hours when it gets hot.

Just a suggestion, download this little utility called Mobile Meter, so you can see actually what temp your HDD is getting to. I did video editing on my T22 and I don't think my HD ever got above 58c or 59c; I had it operating for over 6 hours as well. You can also check the temp of the processor and see activity on the battery if you are using it.

5 Mins later - 49C

Might be cause I had the laptop on leather sofa 0.0

Ok just gotten really odd.
I plugged my USB Wifi thing in and the temp has spiked way up to 74C
for about 2 mins then it dropped back down to 48C
