A30 - High density SODIMM support?

#1 Post by bretski » Fri Aug 08, 2008 4:20 pm

Hi all,

I just purchased an A30 (2652-36U), and would like to upgrade the RAM. I've been searching through old threads, but couldn't find a definitive answer to this question:

Will the A30 support high density SODIMMs? I found a couple of sellers who have 512MB high density sticks (described as 16x16). Advice appreciated!

You shouldn't have to worry about density issues with an A30. That system can take 2 x 512MB PC133 modules. By definition, those will be "high density" as a 512MB module built with low density components will have to have 32 individual memory chips on it! Such a beast would be much larger than the "standard" 1.25" height of an SODIMM (unless some very fancy packaging techniques were used) and thus it would not fit inside most memory bays; possibly Apple excepted.

I'm not sure what the seller means by "16x16". If they are talking about 16 devices having 16 output pins, then that would be somewhat descriptive of a 512MB module. Some 512MB modules will have 8 devices on them and will still work in an A30. If they mean 16MB x 16 devices then that's only 256MB total. If you are referring to this auction on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0291379421 (2 x 512MB PC133 SODIMM for ~$51)

then those will probably work in an A30. Just be sure to run them to memtest86+ for several hours. I've purchased some modules from that eBay seller before and a couple of them had problems with intermittent failures.

Thanks, Ray. It's actually the same seller. I was also confused by the 16x16 spec (came up with 256MB just like you did) :) It's noted in the ad you referenced, as well. Look at "Product Details" in that listing.

It's obviously no-name RAM, and I was a little wary. Price is right for a 512MB module, though...
