anyone even use a utility similar to this? something that can read the hdd smart values?

Every now and then I install HD Health.exe (free utility) http://downloads.zdnet.com/abstract.aspx?docid=349306

Read a report by Google on HDD failures and they reckoned that failure was not predictable. I don't put too much value on it - when the drive starts to make more noise then I just replace it. Highest failure rate is either at the start of the life or after 3 years.

Average life seemed to peak at approx 18 months (as far as I can recall from memory).

There is some vague memory about that drives seem to fail more often when cold versus when being on the warm / hot side. This was suprising the researchers.....
