Wifi Mini PCI Question

#1 Post by CaptErnie » Sun Aug 10, 2008 12:14 pm

I am trying to upgrade my Cisco b card up to a g card on my T30. As I read through the forum I see some recommendations. It looks like the Intel Pro 2200 BG card is a candidate. Is this card ok with the 1802 fix applied? Most of the eBay entries say not for IBM, HP or Compaq. Is there something I should be aware of??

IBM (and HP/Compaq) uses a whitelist to block cards. You can get around it with the no-1802 hack, then use any card you want. The linked Atheros card is far better then an Intel card.

IBM Atheros Card on eBay for T30 at bios 2.10

#4 Post by CaptErnie » Mon Aug 11, 2008 7:21 am

Hi guys, thanks for the feedback. I went to the site and they have 4 cards listed in the header. I went off and viewed those p/n on other eBay listings and only two have Atheros on the card. I would like to get a used solution and am having no luck with the Market forum. If I could have a couple of Atheros P/N.s to watch for on eBay I would just bide my time. Right now I think 39T0073 and 39T0384 are Atheros solutions? Any guidance would be appreciated.

Wifi Mini PCI Update

#5 Post by CaptErnie » Tue Aug 12, 2008 7:48 am

Well after a little bit more research, I found that all four cards are Atheros solutions. They could not guarantee which p/n you would get if you ordered a card. I elected to pick up a used 93P3475 for half the price. Looks like a no brainer.

I want to give kudo;s to this forum. I have had my T30 for a few years and since discovering this forum :

1: I have gotten a fix for my fan replacement and applying artic silver (worked great).
2: I also was tipped off to the 1GB memory stick for $20 after rebate (great deal).

Keep up the good work and I will contribute where appropriate.

Wifi Mini PCI Update

#6 Post by CaptErnie » Mon Aug 18, 2008 3:06 pm

Hi everyone, just a little update:
I got my used IBM Atheros mini-pci card (93p3475) and installed it. I used a device driver that was 4.xx along with my AC 5.0. It would only allow Windows to configure the security which confused me. I went ahead and had problems maintaning connections along with low signal quality. I removed AC and went pure Windows and it ran last night. This morning after re-opening the lid I had problems connecting. I found a later level driver 5.xx and downloaded and installed that. I also re-installed my AC 5.0 and everything is up and running. I am sitting out on the patio with a 100% signal quality which I could never get with my Cisco b card.

A couple of points is that it was hard finding the latest IBM driver and also it appears that this is very sequence sensitive in installing.

why does everybody badmouth the intel pro2200? i have it in my T30 and it works great plus the intel software is very easy to use. range has never been a problem and that's with just about all walls here being 8" thick concrete.

Because it falls on it's face under pressure. Sure it worked great in most of my house, but once I get to the Uni where the AP is either pretty far away or has tens of other people also on it, its performance goes way down.

I was going to drop my two-cents in and agree with this statement. My 2200 card is like to pitbull with a chew toy; it grabs hold of my AP, any AP in fact, and won't let go. However I've used it in some public places where it's been a little shy. WZC seems to be good with this card too!
