Rescue and Recovery do not see backups after factory restore

#1 Post by matram » Mon Aug 11, 2008 11:12 am

Hi,

I have an old X40 which caught a bad virus.

Before doing a factory restore using the service partition I ran a backup using R&R to a USB disk. The disk already contained several backups from the same computer.

After doing the restore and upgrading all software to the latest version I tried to use R&R to restore user files.

The problem is that when I try to do a restore from the USB disk there are no backups at all listed? There should be about 5. If I look directly on the USB disk I believe I can see the backup files.

I have several times restored files from older backups so I know at least older backups are OK.

I believe R&R v4 was used both for the backup on the disk and now for recovery.

Any ideas on what is happening?

Mats

Welcome to the Forum,

Are you looking for the backups using R&R in Windows or booting into the Service Partition?
Another possibility would be to try using a boot cd created at the time you made the first backup, (if you created one).

Hi, Thanks for the input.

I have tried all three approach. R&R from windows menu, from service partition and from a boot CD generated more than a year ago.

Does not make a difference. Same result no backups visible on the USB disk.

Machine name is different after the restore. Does that have an effect? Are back-ups in some way tied to the old identity so they are not recognized now?

I'm guessing this is possible. See this other thread where the fella has a new HD he's trying to restore to:

Also, I was looking through the 4.1 Deployment Guide PDF (http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-68260) and found the following on pg. 18:

To complete a merge operation, MOVE permissions exist for the User account. If logged in with an account other than the account that created the folder initially, such as the administrator, the merge process will fail.

While this is specifically about mreges, I wonder if because your machine name is different, if R&R thinks its a different "user"?
