Di I need a Port Replicator?
Di I need a Port Replicator?
Hi, I'm on the verge of buying a Port Replicator II for my T41. But as I only want to attach an external mouse, keyboard, and monitor, l'm wondering if by just selecting 'Do Nothing' in Power Options/Advanced for what happens when I close the lid, that will do. I can simply attach these to the T41 as it is. Am I missing something? (I just want the laptop to sit under a monitor stand out of the way, and will not be using its display).
Thanks,
Robert
Thanks,

You don't need to change the power settings unless you wish to. If the laptop is off, you need only park it on the port replicator closed, and power it on using the power switch on the replicator. The external monitor, mouse, NIC and so on will all work. When you are done, use the Shutdown command to turn off the laptop and then eject it from the replicator. Now your laptop will function normal including the suspend functions. Very neat. ... JD Hurst
@sagara:
Basically you are right. You don't really need the port replicator to plug in an external monitor, a mouse and a keyboard. The point of the port replicator is that you don't have to plug and unplug all these things. They stay connected to the port replicator and all you have to do is connect your TP to the port replicator.
If you don't mind fiddling around with all these plugs everytime you want to take the TP away from the desk you can save the money for the port replicator. I bought one because this is the only way I get a fully featured COM-Port for my T42p

It's a trick. Get an axe.

Exactly. I purchased the port replicator and actually only have AC, NIC, and printer plugged in to it. It's nice to just drop it on the port rep, but I'm not sure if it's $149 nice.
However, if you have monitor, NIC, mouse, keyboard, AC, printer, USB something, speakers, blah blah blagh, it would be a very helpful item.

If anyone is still watching this thread, I just thought of another question: there is no PCMCIA slot on the Replicator, but my internet access is through my Wireless PCMCIA card - would I lose this when the TP is in the Replicator? Also, will I be reduced to the one USB port on the Replicator - the TP has two?

Quite honestly I think you'd be wasting your money.
When I used my T21 at work, the replicator was a big advantage as everything had to be connected (network, speakers, usb mouse etc.) and I had one at work and one at home.
With the T42 (and why not a T41) everything has changed - I have wireless networks, a Bluetooth mouse - the only thing I connect is the power brick.
Just my 2 cents (of €uro...)

No. The PC-Card slots keep working when the TP is connected to the port replicator.sagara wrote:there is no PCMCIA slot on the Replicator, but my internet access is through my Wireless PCMCIA card - would I lose this when the TP is in the Replicator?
I would have to guess but since the USB-ports of the T42 are on the left side I think that you can use them in addition to the one on the back of the replicator.sagara wrote:Also, will I be reduced to the one USB port on the Replicator - the TP has two?
