Any DD-WRT/OPENWRT fans?

I have been doing some heavy mods on my Linksys WRT54GL router including adding a serial port, a 1gb SD card, running samba, apache servers and openvpn by using DD-WRT v24 firmware(eko TNG) in the past week. The router reminded me I used to have an old PII-200Mhz desktop used as a NAT gateway in 2002. It was a lot of fun.

I just wonder if the idea below is doable:
Yesterday I bricked my Linksys WPS11 print server when the server management software(BiAdmin) crashed during firmware upgrade(actually I thought the wireless part died earlier and that was why I wanted to reload the firmware). So I was thinking, if people can use customized transceivers to attached two serial ports onto the router, is it possible to attach a parallel port or a USB port to it? I know it might have something to do with the control chip version inside the router and also the required pins might not be there. But it would be great if I can just run CUPS on the customized router with a parallel printer attached to it so everyone can use the printer through the wireless router!

Hmm.. actually in my place, the printer and the router have to be on different floor. I guess my idea probably won't do.

Or like Purcy mentioned I can try using Bluetooth. One adapter attaches to the printer and the other one attaches to the router(if an add-on USB port is possible on the router) and then run Bluez on the router to communicate with the printer. I think it's amazing that a router basically is a linux system with only 16MB ram, 4MB flash memory(for the firmware), and 1gb(actual size is 950MB) storage space! You can even install a updated version of mmc/gpio driver to get the router to recognize even larger SD cards.

I have been runnning DD-WRT on my WRT54G V3 since it was new. The first version I ran was V21b back in 2005.

I run "Hyper-WRT" (a very old version) on my WRT54G. It's been going strong since 2004 or 2005 (can't remember), it's got the best uptime imaginable, only time it goes down is when the power goes out I also have dd-wrt on my Fonera router.

I decided to try out something else. After reading this

I loaded tomato firmware and it does show noticeable difference in terms of http response and QoS efficiency.

The only thing that I missed (which is probably not complete hopeless anyway) is tomato firmware (v1.21) doesn't support SD/mmc natively so I have to either compile the mmc driver into a module or find a pre-compiled module compatible with tomato.

I am afraid that I cannot help you, but am also a DD-WRT user.

I am running 24-micro on my WRT54G.

The QoS sucks but the uptime answers only to the flow of electricity.

Am passively looking for one that can run the full version, as I wouldn't mind seeing the full power of DD-WRT or some other firmware. I also need a bridge, so it gives me an excuse.

You should be able to sell your router after you get one that has no less than 4mb flash memory on ebay for minimum expenses. It's nice to have QoS function fully working for people with med/heavy network utilization.

I found a WRT54GS for $25, but was unable to get to it fast enough.
