Sound buttons vs. Sys Tray Icon

#1 Post by cspgsl » Tue Aug 12, 2008 6:57 am

I have a T61p running Vista Ult, Sound Max Integrated Digital HD Audio

This might be a dumb question (in spite of knowing that there are really only dumb answers...) but, clicking on the speaker icon in the System Tray has no effect if the kbd mute button beside the Esc. key has been pressed first. To enable the sound I must press one of the kbd volume buttons beside the ThinkVantage button.

The Sys Tray icon does not show it as being muted if the kbd Mute button is pressed and clicking on the icon will not enable the sound unless a kbd volume button is pressed first (either up or down).

Are the functions independent of each other?

Thanks in advance

While I can't speak for this in Vista the sound control icon in Windows XP and the buttons on my thinkpad are independent of each other. Don't know why that is and I could have sworn it didn't start happening until I installed the software that shows the volume level when you push the buttons on the keyboard. Not really a big deal for me though. I just set the volume on the keyboard to max and then in Windows to just below maximum and only use the buttons on the keyboard to mute and change volume.

Thanks Evil

It isn't any problem here either. I accidentally discovered the issue while trying to play a song. I couldn't figure out why there was no sound while the icon showed as not muted. I started pushing the sound buttons on the kbd and viola.

It doesn't make any sense but I was just thinking that I might have something set wrong.

The keyboard volume control is independent of the software volume control in the OS. This way, you can always control the volume regardless of what OS or sound driver is installed. Personally, I just leave Windows' volume at max and use the buttons to control the actual volume.

This is a little OT, but related to the button.

When I'm running Vegas Pro 8, if I try to toggle sound off and on with the sound button, the button doesn't work on the volume control, but acts like an arrow keypress inside Vegas. Any ideas? (T61 with XP Pro).
