Boot from USB stick?

#1 Post by jeroenp » Mon Dec 27, 2004 6:28 pm

Anyone having experience with booting from an USB stick?

Not trying to re-invent the wheel, I'd appreciate any pointers to steps that do work for booting a T42p with an USB memory stick, or USB hdd enclosure.

Search around on this forum...plenty has been written about it, incuding links to software downloads to enable your usb key to be bootable. I'd direct you to the exact thread, but don't recall exactly where it was...but I know it was 2-3 weeks ago, or maybe 4 or so weeks ago.

Search - the thread is here - I downloaded an HP utlility that worked great with my non-hp USB key. If you come up empty, PM me, I'll hook you up.

A Good Article on Booting from USB Devices.....

#4 Post by Peter_S » Wed Dec 29, 2004 1:33 pm

...can be found at the following Web site, http://www.informationweek.com/story/sh ... D=28700158

Fred Langa, the author, does a nice job of summarizing what's involved in booting from a USB device - including the obvious one, that the PC's BIOS must support booting from a USB drive (all currently available IBM Thinkpad T models do). The article lists the Web address for the Hewlett Packard software which will format and make bootable a USB device:
http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files ... 20306.html

Good luck! The previous ThinkPads.com message postings on this subject basically regurgitated the information found in the Information Week article. I suspect some ThinkPads.com members sourced their info from Fred Langa's column.
