18 month old T40 fan is now whining......

#1 Post by sktn77a » Mon Dec 27, 2004 10:33 pm

My daughters's 18 month old T40 (2373-72U) fan was pretty quiet when the computer was new. However, now it has a high-pitched whine when it kicks in. Anybody else experienced this? Is it a sign of impending doom???

Thanks
Keith

I've experienced something similar on my 6-month-old Athlon midtower. The retail AMD fan (aka barely adequate piece of junk) started making a high pitched noise. The fan continued to spin at its rated speed (as observed through Motherboard Monitor), but it got so irritating that I just bought a new fan.

I'd send it in for service if it gets to be a distraction.

Worst case scenario is the fan fails and the CPU throttles itself severely to avoid overheating.
Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!
