X61 Access Connections problem: No wireless connectivity!

#1 Post by Marc_G » Thu Aug 14, 2008 3:06 pm

Hi folks,

I've just got a new X61 running XP SP2. It's been stripped down by my corporate IT folks from a software perspective and originally had essentially no Lenovo software at all. I've convinced them to let me have Access connections but have had trouble getting it installed. I don't have admin rights so an IT guy is doing the installations for me.

The problem is that when Access Connections (version 5) comes up with the Radios list, there is no entry for the wireless network connectivity, just the bluetooth. So, when I'm trying to make a new wireless profile, only the modem shows up as an available network adapter.

I've got installed the Hotkey utility (seems to be working), Power Manager (again, seems OK), and the latest Wireless driver for the 4965AG wifi link network adaptor (version 11.05).

In the AC 5.0 requirements list, some places it shows the 11.5 (hmmm...versus 11.05 ?) wireless adapter (which shows as the latest, in the downloads section) as the required version, but in other parts of the document it refers to version 12.0.0.75 which I haven't found anywhere.

The power manager shows as 1.40 which is the latest on the downloads page despite the stated requirement for 1.42.

I'm tempted to attempt installing 4.52 Access Connections which I recently downloaded, in hopes its requirements are less recent.

Since I have to have my IT guy do all this, it's a real pain.

Can anyone offer further suggestions as to why AC 5.0 doesn't seem to recognize the presence of my wireless features? They are on, and they do work if I control them from Windoze.

Thanks!

Marc

You did all the right things, but I don't know in what order -- and the order matters. Do precisely what follows and it will work.

Uninstall in the following order:
1. HotKey driver (Fn-F5)
2. Power Manager (including Power Manager Driver)
3. Access Connections (including Connection Profiles)
4. WLAN card's drivers
5. Reboot.

Upon reboot, click "Cancel" on the "Found New Hardware" wizard", and then reinstall in the following order:
4, 2, 1, 3, 5.

Please read the PM (Private Message) that I sent you.

Thanks. Will hook up with my IT guy tomorrow and give it a whirl.

Note that I had apparently not included the PM DRIVER though I had the PM Application software. The driver is now installed and we removed AC 5 and installed AC 4.52. No joy.

So, tomorrow the great uninstall... reinstall commences!

Thanks

OK,

So I performed the indicated operations as listed, paying attention to detail. Note that I interpretted the "power management driver" to be actually the pair of PM installs (one is really the device driver, one is really the battery management application).

After doing this, and installing either AC 5.0 or 4.52 (I'm currently at 4.52), I STILL don't see the wireless radio listed along with the bluetooth radio (which is present) on the main F5 menu. However, the wireless card is (!!) now listed as an adaptor I can use in setting up a profile. I will set it up tonight once I'm home and can configure my local wifi into it.

Any ideas why the wifi radio isn't listed on the wireless radio status indicator, and how to get it there?
I have an on/off switch that I can use, but I'm onery and would like to fix this if possible.

Marc

PS: For tonight only, ending around 8 am tomorrow, I have admin priveledges so I can actually fix stuff.

Hmm. I'm not as set as I thought. Though I can see the wireless network adaptor, the AC software apparently can't control it or find networks. The Find Networks option is greyed out. And when I try to manually configure a connection, the "Wireless Mode" drop-down has no options in it. I can't get past that.

If I try to find networks from within the Profile manager, it says the radio is powered off (but it's not!) and ask if it should turn it on. I click OK and then nothing more happens.

Any thoughts? I've only got until tomorrow morning before I lose admin priveledge.

Marc

PS: I did apply the KB893357-v2 patch.
