Sorry, another SATA Question

I installed Vista Ultimate on a T61p. I tried installing the correct SATA drivers during the install, both in Compat and SATA mode, but neither install worked. So I installed in Compat mode. After all the Lenovo and Microsoft updates I have an error free Device Manager. When I try to update the controller drivers to the SATA drivers provided by Lenovo, I get a message that says "Windows has determined that the driver software for your device is up to date."

Putting the BIOS back into SATA mode results in a BSOD. The computer will only run in Compat mode. This is bad because my data was backed up to an UltraBay SATA drive, which is not recognized in Compat mode. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unless i'm wrong you can install Vista on the T61p when BIOS is set to SATA native mode without the need to have any additional drivers during install. Then when Vista is installed you can download and update the driver. Did your Vista installation fail without a separate SATA driver with the BIOS set to SATA native mode?

I'm not sure how to change to SATA native mode after Windows Vista is installed. I read some instruction for XP how to do this some time ago and it worked fine for me. Never tried to do this using Vista. When i followed the instructions i had to install the SATA driver before i changed the BIOS to SATA native mode. Maybe it's easier with Vista and easy to change to SATA native mode after Windows is installed....i don't know.

It was a bad floppy!! The annoying thing is that depending on conditions I got a different message. 2 out of the three messages were of no help at all.

Case 1, during the install "Installation of the driver failed".
Case 2, after the install "The current driver is correct."

I only figured out when I tried a repair install of the OS. When I pointed to the floppy I got a message that the floppy could not be read. I backed out of the repair and then pointed to a temp folder containing the drivers on the hard drive. Bingo! I'm in full SATA on the internal and UltraBay drives.
