T30 Lid Switch

#1 Post by CeeDee » Fri Aug 15, 2008 9:20 am

The lid switch on my T30 has come loose (I think) and has now pushed under the trim, so of course as the lid plunger cannot make contact with it, it is not working.
My problem is that I don't seem to find any reference to it in the hardware manual. Can anyone tell me if it is something that can be readily purchased and if so what's the proper name for it. And also do I have to strip the thing right down to bare bones to replace it.
If so I think I will just leave it alone.

I don't have a T30 apart to say for sure, but on a T23 the lid switch plunger is a piece of plastic and metal which reaches down to a very tiny microswitch that is soldered to the I/O board. It's firmly attached (or should be :) ) to the keyboard bezel.

If it's just a simple problem of the alignment being out of whack, then you only need to remove the keyboard bezel (palmrest) and re-align the plunger. If it's actually broken, then you have the options of replacing the bezel or trying to glue the piece(s) back together. At least this is what you have to do on a T23. The T30 looks like it was designed the same way.

If the actual microswitch is broken, you could replace the entire I/O board or just the switch (if you can find one and are handy with a soldering iron). That basically means you have to strip everything out to get to the board it's mounted on. For the T30, that could mean a similar I/O board or the motherboard itself.

I'm assuming that the T30 is similar to the T23, but YMMV. I don't think that the HMM would have this switch plunger specifically called out in the parts list as it's part of an existing assembly.

The plunger is a part of keyboard bezel.

Thanks for the replies. It is the micro switch that has come loose, that is why it has slipped out of contact with the plunger. As it requires a major overhaul I think I will just leave it until I need to go in there for something else. Hopefully a long time down the road!

@CeeDee - it's simpler to replace the whole I/O board (it is sepparate from the mobo)
ex: T30, TR451, TR453, R51, R52, X40, X60, R61, T400
X200 - P8600 2.66Ghz, 3G, 250G
G50-70 - 3558U 2.4Ghz, 4G, 1T
