Battery Information

#1 Post by SCURaja » Tue Dec 28, 2004 4:32 am

Hey everyone!
I read the very informative site BatteryUniverse.com

I've owned my t42.23733xu for two months now..and am loving it.. Unfortunately I'm not sure if my battery is up to par..i actually think it might NOT be. I used to completely discharge my battery, until i realized that you should top it off whenever you get a chance and only discharge it once or twice a month for optimum performance.

My Charge Capacity is: 43.24
Design Capacity is: 47.52
Battery is at: 91%
Lost 9% in two months
Cycle Count: 38

If you guys could post your information or 0.2 that would be awesome
thanks

I did the same thing to my battery at the beginning. The lost capacity is gone for good. But from then on my capacity stayed at a quite constant level.

I did the same thing as well on my t42p! I didn't know you should top it up. IBM's website says fully discharge and fully recharge every time. My wear level is 11%.
I took the computer back, the guy just reconditioned it and now it's not holding power anymore. It got from 100% to 96% gradually over a week without using the battery at all. (Do they replace the battery if it doen't hold power?)
Overall the battery holds for 2.5 h which is very humble I think.

BatteryUniverse indeed was very informative. It said the Li-Ion batteries don't have the memory effect. The repair guy was convincing me that they do have it..

I think it really depends on the number of charge cycles it been through. dont let your battery drain out too often. Im at 90 cycles so far in just 7 months! I purchased my laptop in June and the charge capacity of the battery is 56 now as oppose to a design capacity of 71. I have a tendency to take my laptop everywhere without its charger so im usually running on battery. Its pretty simple, the more you rely on battey power, the faster it will die out

If you wish your battery to last you a long time, turn it off when traveling (not in stand-by where it gets drained) and plug it in the outlet whenever you can. But batteries are relatively cheap considering they should last you atleast a year, even if you abuse them like I do (9 cell sells for about 90 bux online). so dont worry too much about it.

If your battery is not performing, then call IBM (800) IBM SERV and ask them to send you a new one on warrenty. It's important to explain to them that you have completly discharged and cycled the battery 3 times. If you've done that, and you tell them, they will send you a new battery as long as you've had the machine less then 1 year. I've had my machine 11 months now and just had both my slim and extended batteries replaced by IBM.

I tried that right after my capacity dropped by eleven percent in the beginning. The guy told me that they won't exchange it until the battery maximiser says that it has gone bad.

Yes, you must explain to them that the battery maximizer information says the battery is bad, and that you have fully cycled the battery three times.

Don't they verify what you told them when they receive the battery?

I got my T23 at the beginning of December from an eBay member. When I got the laptop, battery was in the green zone with 15 charges. A few charges later it dropped into red and was told to completely charge/discharge it. Every week the number has been going up and down but today is the highest it's been.

What ive found out is it works better to let it discharge VERY slowly. I usually leave it on playing an mp3 in winamp or just close the lid. When the meter reads 0% and 0 minutes left, I usually get about another 10 or 15 minutes.

so what is the best charging procedure when replacing batteries (T22)?
a) Fully charge/discharge the new battery a few times and then top it up as often as possible? or
b) Simply charge once and top it up whenever practical?
thanks for help.

Ok, I'm not an expert, but I think there are different issues here. Litiium batteries do not have memory effect like Nicad or NiMH batteries, but they do have something called "digital memory effect" which occurs when the battery electronics get confused about how much juice the battery is holding. I read this on a site of a company that replaces the cells in lithium batteries. You need to run the battery all the way down, and then do a full recharge (maybe a few times in a row) in order for the battery electronics to know how much juice the battery is capable of holding. Otherwise, you get the problem of the battery reading zero (and usually shutting off your computer with your power saving feature) even though there is still actually juice left in the battery. So they say to turn all power saving and autoshut off stuff off and let the battery run down. Then fully recharge and see if things register correctly. I did it with my old T23 battery, and it improved the performance significantly. This is probably why IBM suggests discharging completely once a month or so.
