Hard drive not recognized: PXE-E61 (Hard drive not long en

#1 Post by boris » Sat Aug 16, 2008 9:59 am

Okay so I got a new to me (used) T42P to replace my T41 that was having GPU problems.

I tried loading recover disks on it and got the PXE-E61 error. something about no OS and something about a cabling problem.

As it turns out, it didn't recognize the hard drive because it wasn't long enough-meaning that when whoever put the hardrive in, the caddy didn't place the hard drive far enough back into the slot to make connection. There is an inherent difference between the 15" and 14" in models. I don't know if they use the same caddy and an adapter or if they have a different caddy the places it back farther into the slot. I removed the plastic lid and slit it back into the drive slot and now the operating system is loading just fine.

I know you all probably know this, but thought I should share since I saw others with the same error. :D bv

A small excerpt from the thread WTB: HDD cover for 15" T42p is:
The caddy's are the same in all the T4x thinkpads, 14" or 15". The difference is the cover, on the 15" model the drive sits about 1" deeper inside the notebook, so all IBM did was make the metal tabs on the cover longer to reach the extra inch to the drive screws on the standard caddy.
I didn't know that this was the exact way it is... until I recently found out!

Congratulations with your "new" T42p - from a T42p fellow!
