What Thinkpads have you owned?
What Thinkpads have you owned? For the purpose of this poll, please count your Thinkpads just based on their model names (e.g. T20, T21, T22, etc.) and screen size (e.g. 12.1", 13.3", 14.1", etc.). In other words, if you have had five 15.0" R52's with different product IDs, they still only count as one. Which one is your favorite? Mine is probably a toss-up between the i series 1124 and the 14.1" UXGA T42, which is why these are the only Thinkpads that I still have. I have had this T42 longer than any other Thinkpad. But in terms of durability, it would be the 600/600E/600X series. The length of time I had my first 600E, 3 years and 1 month, was second only to how long I have had the T42.
I bought my first Thinkpad (the above-mentioned 600E) in Sep 2002 and have since owned the following models:
240
240X
365X (10.4")
390X (14.1")
570E
600 (13.3")

As much as I like Thinkpads, this list will probably not grow because I am now more interested in other manufacturers' laptops, e.g. my most recent laptop purchase was HP's Mini 5101 netbook. The i Series 1124, which I bought in Jan 2009, was my last Thinkpad purchase. Another reason is that I now use mainly desktops.

The one I have had the longest is the T41. I like the T61, but the experience has been shattered by it being a Vista machine that still continues to be so full of bugs and shortfalls that it is not yet in production.
The best form factor (2 spindles, 1024x768 screen, wired and wireless) was my T23.

I'm in the process of putting my list together but if Steve (tfflivemb2) posts here, I'm demanding that he list them horizontally instead of vertically

I'm going to go in the opposite direction, and state which ones I haven't owned, it will make a shorter list...
No 75x/76x/770 series
No I series
No 240Z or S31
No X23
No R61 in any shape or form
No X300 or any of the newest, three-digit widescreens...
I'll update if and when I remember something that I've skipped, but that's it for now..

PW, that is an impressive list. Mine is very small compared to any above, and distinct in the sense that I went in the reverse direction - that is first and only "new" thinkpad was (and still is) my 15" T60 and everything else I got was used older models. Sometime or the other, I have owned the following thinkpads from 2006.
1. 15" T60
2. X31
3. T41 - 2
4. T41p - 1
5. T22
6. T23 - 2
7. 600X
8. 380ED
7. A31p - needs lots of parts and some repair
9. X23
10. X41
12. workpad z50
I currently own whatever is listed in blue above except the X23/X41, I have sold every other machine here to other forum members. The X23 was bought for a friend and technically "belongs" to him but am using it till mid september, and I almost want to keep it for myself. The X41 belongs to my prof now, it is the smallest and lightest thinkpad I have seen. I'd love to see a X300 someday, but I am not sure if I want to ever own a widescreen thinkpad.
The A31p (a parts machine bought locally) is the only machine that does needs repairs/parts to get it fully working. It is in storage now and it will be attended to in January. There are some models I want to add to my modest collection someday - PC110, 770z, 240Z, 570E, transnote, A22p and T30. This forum has been *and will be) a integral part of my daily browsing ritutal ever since I decided to get a thinkpad and I have learned so much in the last 2-3 years. I have met some amazing people on the way too!

360 - 9" monochrome 640 x 480
365x - 10.4" color 800 x 600
i1452 - 15" color 1024 x 768
Favorite is the 360... perfect proportions, excellent tool-less case... You could really get through an 8 hour day on one charge if you put it to sleep whenever you walked away from your desk. That's because of the 486sx33 processor (no math co-processor to use up power), no L2 cache, and a low power monochrome screen.
All are now pretty much retired. (but all still work perfectly)
EDIT: And I'm proud of my admittedly short list
I've been using thinkpads since 1993.

TP360 • TP365x • i1452 • TP T42 • Intellistation Z Pro
760EL (new) - the first ThinkPad I had, and quickly learnt there is no substitute (sorry Porsche). I'm also happy to say that IBM/Lenovo service and support in Australia is just as good today, as it was back in 1997 when I had this
365XD (new) - the 760 got stolen
A decent machine, especially for the price. I needed a laptop, had to be a ThinkPad, and couldn't afford another 760. Remember those dual-scan "passive matrix" colour screens?
various 560/Es (sh/ex-lease) - got one of these when I needed a decent subnotebook, and picked up a couple more as I found bargains. Having a few was good, keeping spare parts etc. I liked these very much, though always kept on losing the rear port doors, and in some the screen bezel developed a bow between the hinges
Amongst the 560s I also managed to pick up a 760XD, by error. Quite liked it, so kept it.
various 600/E/Xs (sh/ex-lease) - great, built like tanks, shame about the battery issues... again, ended up collecting a few of these and swapped parts in and out etc. Out of a half-dozen or so batteries I had at one time or antoher, only one didn't exhibit that 95-5% battery warning problem.
T22 (sh/ex-lease) - just like a 600, only faster (and a working battery
)
Z61m (new) - nice, but much bigger than I expected! (The only other 15.4" notebook I had used before then was a Titanium Powerbook...)
X31 (sh) - replaced the Z with this. Brilliant machine! I loved this thing so much, it ended up being my only computer for quite a long time.
X60s (new) - managed to blag a great deal on a new X60s. A nice machine, but sold it soon after.
X41 Tablet (sh) - liked the Tablet, loved the Flexview, HATED that hard disk. Not for the slowness, but the click click click. The digitiser went crazy in the second day of ownership, so was able to get a refund.
X60s (new) - almost identical to the one I had before, but this one had WWAN. Ended up upgrading with an SSD before I sold it.
X60 Tablet (sh) - Tablet! SXGA! Flexview! Yay! A bit on the heavy/big side compared to the X60s, but it's all good
Z60m (sh) - I needed a cheap desktop replacement laptop and had good memories of my Z61m, managed to get a Z60m in need of some TLC for a good price, and fixed it up.
Unless I kept a 'collection' of machines for spare parts, I generally sold one before moving onto the next (except recently, I still own both the X60t and Z60m). I have to say my favourite of the lot was the X31. It cost peanuts, and there wasn't anything it couldn't do.
Non-ThinkPad laptops I've had during the time;
Apple Titanium PowerBook G4 - between the 600s and the T22. pretty, but so fragile. My watch would leave permanent scratches, and in general felt so frail I was scared to haul it around everywhere. But that was nothing compared to the molasses that was pre-acceleration MacOS X 10.1...
Compaq Presario (consumer grade 14" WS) - between the T22 and Z61m. A cheap consumer laptop, but ended up better than I had expected. I missed the Trackpoint though!
Dell D620 - between the two X60s'es. Nice computer, accessories (docking etc) were really well thought out. But the 14" WXGA+ LCD was terrible! No contrast, washed out, it was the worst screen ever. The 'pointing stick' is a poor imitation of the TrackPoint.
365XD (new) - the 760 got stolen
various 560/Es (sh/ex-lease) - got one of these when I needed a decent subnotebook, and picked up a couple more as I found bargains.
Z61m (new) - nice, but much bigger than I expected! (The only other 15.4" notebook I had used before then was a Titanium Powerbook...)
X31 (sh) - replaced the Z with this. Brilliant machine! I loved this thing so much, it ended up being my only computer for quite a long time.

Well, so far I have owned several Thinkpads:
1. R51e - 15" XGA. My first thinkpad. Bought it in 2006 when I was preparing to enter college. Actually, I was interested in T43, but I didn't have enough cash to get one. So I picked R51e (the cheapest among other Thinkpads in the market). This machine has been serving me these two years without any problems (thank God), and I love it so much. I will never sell this one. This one is my favorite.
2. T43 - 14,1" XGA. I started to become a thinkpad lover. Bought it three months ago, then sold it three weeks after. I didn't find noticable increase in performance compared to R51e, so I decided to sell it.
3. X22 - 12,1" XGA. Bought this to replace the T43. I am really happy with this machine. It is rather slow though, but its compact size and portability are what this machine is meant to be.

For me, it's been:
3 730T's: One that has a converted suitcase docking station, and another has a proper docking station. The only downside is their batteries and unusual memory/disk requirements.
600E: the "Tonga" one, IIRC - making CPU upgrades difficult. However, it's held up quite well.
390: Has a PII/400 upgrade, but has enough design issues (nonstandard disk bay, hinges) that make me hope Lenovo never gets this bad.
A31p: What the W700 should have followed, not what they have there. This is how I found out how good Flexview is and to insist upon it.
T42p: had enough service calls in the warranty period to be on a "first name" basis with the technician. By the third board, they finally got the board issue solved.
T60p: This will probably have to last longer than the T42p, as it's the last I've seen of Flexview. I'd consider it the last decent Thinkpad out there of the "thin workstation" variety.

I don't know if I can call my latest purchase a thinkpad, but it comes darn close to it: a PC110!

LOL....ok, ok, ok....how about I just say that one could look at my signature, and add I will forget the number of 600 series Thinkpads that I have owned. I have pretty much kept one of each model that I have owned...rkawakami wrote:I'm in the process of putting my list together but if Steve (tfflivemb2) posts here, I'm demanding that he list them horizontally instead of vertically.
P.S.
Not sure how I missed this thread in the first place....
