I've only had one Thinkpad, the one I'm using now, a T60p with 15 inch display. Since my first laptop around 1999 or so, I've always wanted one but never ended up with one until this year. I've owned 1 Gateway, 1 Sony, 3 Dell's, and 1 HP besides this one. The Gateway was my first and it also had a 15 inch display with a 4:3 ratio but only 1024 x 768. It was sweet at the time and I paid over 3k for it making it a seriously high end machine at the time. What made me finally get this T60p was the 4:3 1600 x 1200 display. I'll always prefer 4:3.

4:3 seems to be a preference for many but the world is moving to 16:9 whether you like it or not.o2nexus wrote: What made me finally get this T60p was the 4:3 1600 x 1200 display. I'll always prefer 4:3.
Having owned a 16:9 machine since the end of July, I have found it to be amazing for displaying my 16:9 photos and viewing video footage shot in 16:9. Those images never looked sensible using a 4:3 screen.
Change is like a big steam engine rolling towards you. You may be able to deflect it but, if you stand in its way, it will kill you.

Sadly yes. A small focus group thinks 16:9 or some other feature is "cool", the tail wags the dog, and the rest of us gets saddled with it. ... JDH

I'd like to own an X201 (unlikely) or X100e, but hard to justify since moving to OS X for work and wanting to work and game on the same machine.
Currently I use a MacBook Pro i7 15" with high-res matte display, dual boot OS X (work) and Windows 7 Pro 64 (gaming) with excellent results. I'm debating passing the iPad to my wife and getting the new 11" MacBook Air, though for courtroom use the iPad is still better.

Re: What Thinkpads have you owned?
That may be true, but they're a drop in the bucket. The biggest buying factor for most is cost. Because of this manufacturers don't really have a lot of options. If they go against the grain and use 4:3 screens it'll cost more to manufacture, which will cost them sales. I don't necessarily see 4:3 as the best. WXGA is more usable than XGA. Perhaps on the higher resolution screens you've got a better argument. I'm much more interested in getting a quality screen than the resolution.killer wrote:4:3 seems to be a preference for many but the world is moving to 16:9 whether you like it or not.

Re: What Thinkpads have you owned?
I can make do with widescreen if I use something like MaxMax to limit the maximized window size to a 4:3/5:4 ish proportion and allocate the extra space to a RainMeter sidebar or something. Autohiding the taskbar also gives back some vertical space. I do wonder how far LCD manufacturers can push this trend. Maybe we'll see 2:1's in the future

Re: What Thinkpads have you owned?
There is nothing wrong with whining on these message boards about the disappearance of 4:3, or 16:10 for that matter. In fact, with enough people complaining, the manufacturers may eventually listen and start making LCDs with those aspect ratios again. In fact, I suspect that these complaints contributed to Steve Jobs' picking a 4:3 screen for the iPad. I would shut up if 16:9 were really superior to 16:10, but it is not.killer wrote:4:3 seems to be a preference for many but the world is moving to 16:9 whether you like it or not.
What resolution does your 16:9 machine have? And how do you like viewing Word or PDF documents on it? I too prefer to watch 16:9 videos on a 16:9 screen, but for most other tasks, 16:10 works better by giving me more vertical working area.killer wrote:Having owned a 16:9 machine since the end of July, I have found it to be amazing for displaying my 16:9 photos and viewing video footage shot in 16:9. Re: What Thinkpads have you owned?
My 16:9 machine has 1600 x 900 resolution. I find it perfect for 16:9 photos and videos.
No problem looking at Word or PDF documents. Its width allows me to use windows properly and lay two documents side by side.
Each to their own.
4:3 was frustrating for me if I wanted to look at video or wide-landscape photos. 16:9 works well if you take its upsides over the downsides.

Re: What Thinkpads have you owned?
I've had a T43, T60 and T61 all 14.1 in SXGA (1400 x 1050 pixels) so yes, I like that form factor
@jdhurst - my T61 came loaded with some abominable OS called Windows Vista Home Basic. No wonder some early T61 reviews were not that enthusiastic - lol. I replaced this thing with Ubuntu linux along with Windows XP (for those rare times when I must use a Windows OS) Under linux the thing runs very nicely. My T61 was a model 8889. It came with 3 wires in the lid for wireless N but the dumbed down intel 4965(?) card with wireless N disabled. i replaced the dumbed down card with a full wireless N 4965 card - fantastic connectivity!

Windows Home anything on the desktop has always been a problem. I used Vista Business until I switched to Windows Pro and it worked fine. Good news on the wireless. ... JDH

Re: What Thinkpads have you owned?
I still like to use the standard display over widescreen. When I hook up my desktop to my new HDTv which everyone knows todays tvs are all wide display. It takes me awail to get the right resolution. where Its very easy and common to pick 800X600 for older PCs and with 2000-2005 1027X768. Im using my standard IBM LCD monitor 15" and it still fits me well. If I want wide display. I can switch to the new monitor next to this one. I only own 3 widescreen laptops: SL500, T60 and S10 + the 19" LCD monitor if counting that.
