I just two "N" upgrades.
One on my T41 with a MiniPCI Atheros AR5008 A/B/G/N.
Installed the 3rd antenna under the palm rest.
I was useing a Intel 2200Pro B/G.The single on the intel was about 95% to 99% all the time.Router in the next room.
When i installed the new "N" card, loaded the drivers, went into the D-link "N" router and set up WPA-2 password and to output "N-Only".
ItThe T41 connects great at the full 300mbps/sec. But the single went way down to only 55% to 60%.
The very same thing with the T60P i just put in the Atheros AR5008 MiniPCI-E A/B/G/N card. The T60P had the Intel A/B/G befor and got 95% to 99%. Then with the new Atheros AR5008 card it went down to 55% to 60%.
I also installed the 3rd antenna under the palm rest.It connects at 300 also.
I'm thinking it must be something in the router's settings. I have a D-link DIR-625.
I would have thought i would have gotten the full 100% single where "N" has much much more range.

I would go by actual performance. I don't know about 3945 vs Atheros (the T60), but 2200 vs Atheros is no contest. Despite the fact that (at least under Linux for me) the Atheros signal appears much lower, the 2200 is the one who starts disconnecting first when farther away.
The fact that it's connecting at 300 is also a good sign, bad reception would cause it to connect at slower speeds.

A true test is tomorow is to just walk up the road and see where the single starts to connect lower.
I can pick up the house on eather side of me(just "G").
I should now be able to go about 5 or 6 houses from mine.About 400' to 500'.

i'm seeing the same as you, weaker signals for 802.11n. at least according to the specs on the sparklan website, it seems that many cards output weaker signals for .11n to begin with. further more, .11n seems to be much more sensitive to interference and if you're running on the extremely over-crowded 2.4ghz band, there's plenty of interference to be had.
i'd boost the signal on the router to high (i have a dir-615, it made a difference on mine), try to shut off as many 2.4ghz appliances as possible and keep a good clear line of site to the router. you can always try switching to 5ghz if your router and wifi card support it.
