X61 WiFi range and Network Stumbler issue

#1 Post by jodo2017 » Tue Aug 19, 2008 12:05 am

Hi,

I have a X61 with a Intel 4965 AGN (FRU# 42T0865) and I'm having huge issues with the range of my WiFi.

I've changed the settings in power saving, device manager and Access Connections to best performance and tested with the newest and older drivers, with and without Access Connections. My old X40 (Intel 2200bg) shows double the amount of APs.

Furthermore, I can't get Network Stumbler to detect a singe AP, why is this?

Best Regards
Jodo

According to thinkpad wiki, http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Intel_PRO ... ss_Adapter, it does not have 'promiscuous mode sniffing capability'.
X22 - 800mhz - 640MB RAM - 60GB Hitachi 7200rpm 7k100
X40 - 1.4ghz - 1.5GB RAM - 8GB Transcend 300x CF on Addonics CF/IDE Adapter
T42p - 1.8ghz - 15" UXGA - 1GB RAM - 160GB HDD
X61t - C2D 1.6ghz - 12.1" SXGA+ - 8GB RAM - Intel G3 300GB SSD

Not so! The advice below covers the 4965AGN and other Intel WiFi cards...
http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/CS-025286.htm wrote:Promiscuous mode, a new feature found in the Intel® PROSet/Wireless Network Connection Software 10.5.x, 11.1.x, and later versions, prevents network bridge connections from functioning. Promiscuous mode (pmode) allows the WiFi adapter to view all WiFi frames, not just those destined to itself. This type of feature is used when employing frame capturing software. Intel's pmode only supports AirMagnet* frame capture utilities.

Thanks, but what does this mean in practice?

Can I run NetStumbler or not? If yes, do I need any special settings on my 4965 AGN?
