#1 Post by charles mcdaniel » Wed Dec 29, 2004 12:21 am

what is the fastest processor i can put in my 600X..?
i've been looking at Ebay and saw some in the 750mhz range but was wondering if it was worth it to do the upgrade?.
mine is currently either a 600 or 650 i can't remember.
Thanks, Charles

The fastest processor you can put in a ThinkPad 600X is an Intel Pentium III 850MHz in the MMC-2 form factor. It is very expensive and sometimes almost impossible to locate that specific CPU. The PIII 750MHz is much more widely available and more reasonably priced. There is also an 800MHz version available.

I have installed both a PIII 750MHz and a PIII 800MHz in a 600X. Whether such an upgrade is worth it depends on what kinds of applications you use. I notice only a very tiny increase in most day-to-day applications such as web browsers, word processors, spreadsheets, etc. A noticeable, but not overwhelming, difference appears under more processor-dependent activities - e.g. decompressing files, converting video files, performing transformations on large graphic files, and presumably also on compiling programs or massive calculations. And lastly, I also notice significant improvements on 3D games, but most people don't try to play 3D games on their 600X.

thats what i needed to know as mine is a 650 MHZ P3. i found a 850mhz on ebay but it was a little to high for me.
i might try a 800 just see if it worth the trouble.
how hard is the upgrade. is there some place where i might get the schematics for this unit? or a break down on this particular upgrade.
Got any extra 800's laying around you might want to get rid of cheap.?
thanks for the reply, Charles

How hard? Depends on how comfortable you are opening up a computer.
Details and schematics are available here:
Hardware Maintenance Manual (January 2000) - ThinkPad 600X

Ha, ha, ha! Not likely! I waited 6 months before I finally found one on eBay that I was willing to spring for....and I still think I paid too much! I'm not a reseller, I'm a hobbyist, and I don't really have extra parts unless they're broken! :o

yeah i know what you mean there i've got several rather large rubber maids around here full of computer junk.
i've found several on E-bay i'm looking at but at the moment i'm not going to pay a arm and a leg for one. the 850 on ebay was at $255.00 u.s. when i last looked.
If you should find one if you would let me know if the price is right i might be intersted. if you aren't that is. i might try a 800 if the price is right.
thanks again for the reply and hope you have a happy new year. Charles McDaniel
